I have an M Farmall that has a 51 model engine(according to the number at #1 piston)and a 41 model number on the clutch housing tag. Everything else on the tractor, except the front grill(old spot weld 2 piece) is from the 51. I want to replace the tag due to its very bad condition. Which would be more correct, the 1941 serial#, or the 1951 serial#?

biggerred, lots of M's and H's have different casting letters on each piece of the tractor depending on when the tractor was put together. Makes sense to stick with the correct tag on the clutch housing. Its a 41 regardless of the engine numbers. My opinion

I guess no one understands my question. I was asking which is more correct, the Serial# on the engine, or the one on the clutch housing/ And no, I'm not trying to make it into something that it is not, as the serial# on the engine is from a tractor that no longer lives, only the engine remains.

Last fall I was at a tractor show in East Tennesse. Someone had a very nice M without a serial number plate there. He had a plaque stating it was a 1944 model. Well by walking around tractor I could easily see it was a 1941 model with a 1944 engine. The axle housings, wheels, top deck, transmission housing, belt pulley and other places had 1941 casting dates only the engine was 1944. See what I mean?

I would go with number that matches most of the casting dates. There should be at least 6 to 8 on tractor. Just my opinion.
