I just completed installing new sleeves and pistons in a D239 engine. The head appeared to be
OK. I got rid of the Oil consumption problem.

Now I have a lot of White Diesel smoke. I have not run the tractor a lot yet to set the rings.

Will this go away once the rings are set? Or do I
Have Valve or Injector problems here?

Thanks

Bob D

Sorry to hear it. I had exactly the same problem and these folks responded with the same advice to me. I tried to warn you when you asked about pistons in a previous post Link
I>Link still haven't checked my compression as the adapter is a little hard to come by, but I believe these guys as it is a little harder to start (spec is 315 - 340 psi). I also read in the service manual that a low sac nozzle is available to reduce startup/idle white exhaust. If I ever run down my problem I'll post the results, but it runs fine and the white exhaust dissappears when the tractor is up to temp and under load.
Good Luck,
Ray

Thanks for the advice. I should have listened. Do you know what the part number is for the Low sac nozzle. Also it was recommended to rebuild the head. Also any thing you come up with would be helpful.

One thing I have not tried to adjust the timing on the Injector pump, Do you think this would help some of the problem? Thanks again.

Sorry, I don't have the part number for the low sac nozzle - can't help you there. In addition, I didn't have any luck with a mild adjustment of the injector pump(only by turning it on the pivot mount - not the with gear alignment). If you can check the compression, that would be the place to start. Good luck,
Ray

Did you remove the injectors before you removed and cleaned up the head? It is possible that a nozzel was damaged this will cause the white smoke also.

Bob, first thing you should have checked is the size of the openings in top of pistons. That is where the compression has to happen. Your compression is to low. Thats the reason for the white smoke.

I know you don't want to here this BUT you got the wrong pistons in it and it is not making enought compersion ,I doubt that it is a valve or injector problem . It proable is a littel hard to start also .

I have no problem starting the tractor. Also
the Pistons and Sleeves were from Clevite Perfect
Circle. They were suppose to be for a D239.

What is the next step?

I would appreciate any help I can get!

The pistons are probably correct, but the replacement ones are lower compression (to cut down noise). Your best bet is to have the head redone and get new valves and seats to bring the valves down into the combustion chamber and thus get more compression and less smoke.
