I guess first I am having a very hard time even starting my F12. I pull governor control rod out part way and advance spark about quarter way and full choke..crank a few times. open choke and crank some more, still nothing. Mag was rebuilt. carb I'm not too fond of seems to be leaking gas out the side between the upper and lower halves. maybe sucking air? Finally get it started with full choke and after totally flooding it out. Then it seems to run pretty decent but my other problem is that the engine speed fluctuates. I'll be tooling along doing laps around the yard and the engine just slows way down and then it will sometimes slowly come back up to speed but usually I just goose it along with the control rod. Hitting bumps will also cause this problem, sounds like not getting gas or that the governor is slowing it down.I'm assuming it's the governor but would like to hear from some of you on these problems.

I had trouble with my F12 flooding because the float was slightly touching the side of the float chamber and would catch and cause flooding. Binding governor linkage will cause funny governor operation. there is a small bearing on the top and bottom of the vertical governor shaft that could be rusty and catching. Also mak sure the vertical shaft is not bent its easy to do when removing the upper governor housing.

While I am unable to decipher just what it is you are trying to say in your mysteriously worded post, I somehow get the suspicion that you have the firing order in improper sequence, or a couple of your wires improperly terminated.

First off sounds like the float is stilling in the carb, and or like our F-20 the float was totally eaten up if it is try dipping it in some kind of sealer that gas won't eat up. Have you tried adjusting the timing any it sounds like though it is your carb from what you described alot of the F-series do do that flucuation thing though.

My F-12 gets to be hard to start if I have a full tank of gas in it. The level of the gas is higher than the carb at that point and the needle valve may be a bit worn so it will flood at the drop of a hat with a full tank. If I have a full tank , I have to turn on gas for a second or two and then turn it off. then without the choke on , crank it up, and it usually starts then i have to turn the gas back on.If the gas level is at the carb bowl level or lower I have to use the choke to start it. If the speed fluctuates I would bet some governor parts are worn. I have been lucky so far in that my 10-20 and the 12 have good governors and they both run steady even with varying loads like a saw mill or plow with changing soil conditions. the 12 will sometimes stick at a little above idle speed if I had it running wide open and then slow down but it will idle down ok if I hit the throttle quick and then close it down quick.

I agree that it seems like a carb problem; however, it may be a combination of things. Start with the easy things first. Check the timing, firing order and wires (it's easy to get 2 and 3 switched and you'll get a similar problem), Short accross a plug end and the head with a screwdriver, If no change in performance it could be a bad cylinder/valves. Then go the carb. Take the L-shape cover off of the governor linkage. Watch to see how freely the linkage moves, as sometimes condensation rusts up the parts. Check the drain tube and make sure it's free and clear. Then check out the carb. Good Luck! Ron
