Question for The Red

I put a narrow front on my H last weekend and see that it turns too sharp for comfort and safety. I can turn the wheels 90 deg. to the tractor and assume it would turn right off the half gear in the box if I kept going. Someone mentioned using an extended bolt head on one of the four bolts that hold it on to the bolster shaft. Any thoughts?

At low speed it is real handy to be able to turn at almost 90 and hit the brake on that side and swing right around. It makes it nice doing chores in tight spots and helps wip it around when plowing or ease through a tight turn around when planting. Through last year I was farming (Sweet corn) with a Super M. Never dropped it on myself. Don't go nuts but don't be to afraid either. I sold it and bought a tricycle MM 445 due to more power and features etc. The first thing I missed was being able to turn the front to near 90.

One of the four bolts that bolt the steering arm to the bolster shaft should have a stub out the head of the bolt to stop the turning each direction. One of the front two I think left front.

Bleedinred and Ace - That extended head stop bolt should be installed in the RIGHT front hole in the bolster flange. If you peek at the underside of the large bolster casting you'll see a half-moon shaped slot that is the steering pivot shaft stop when the extended head bolt is installed. ...Bob M

I'm not the Red and I don;t have and H. But I do have 3 Farmalls with narrow fronts and I have been into all of them.Mine will turn just shy of 90 degrees and then hits a stop that will not allow it to turn any further or come off the worm gear.If you look up to where your bolster bolts on to the front end you should see the stop on the back side of that plate with the bolts through it. I do use some care if makeing a sharp turn and never turn sharp if I'm in road gear. At slow speeds though I like being able to turn on a dime.

Thanks for the info guys. The H looks a lot better with the narrow front than the off brand wide one. In fact, it looks like time to put the mower on and go knock down some hay. I guess 'ole Red is napping today.
