I think Larry's got it - your ammeter is wired up backward. If you have an accurate voltmeter it's simple to verify: Take a reading across the battery with the motor running at full governor. If it shows 6.5 volts or higher, it says the battery is charging OK.

If that's what you find, simply swap the wires at the ammeter terminals - the ammeter will now read correctly.

You need to polarize the generator, take a length of wire and touch the batt term. to the gen term. on the voltage reg. should put you back in business.

Hope I'm not asking the obvious but do you have the wires reversed?

Bob - just to clarify my question.. I believe the M simply has an ammeter to show charge/discharge. The ammeter is direction sensitive to the flow of electricity and if the wires are reversed your meter will read that it is discharging when in fact it is charging fine. Hope this helps

Larry thanks for your answer
I guess i didn't explane my problem right
the meter reads a charge up to about fast idle
speed the engine up to fast speed and the needle moves to max discarge this is a 8wolt set up
i am not sure about changing the wire with the tractor charging up to fast idle

Bob - The old generators have to be spinning pretty good before they start charging..might actually be discharging from the battery at idle speeds. As you increase idle speed and generator output the battery starts charging. If the ammeter was replaced..worked on..etc. and the wires are reversed...it would appear that you are charging at idle speed (really discharging) and as you increase engine speed the needle would move towards the discharge (really charging). Confused yet? If the electrical has not been worked on and the wires are not reversed I wonder about a defective field coil in generator possibly shorting out. Somebody with more knowledge about electricity help me out here.
