To Guy Fay or anyone knowledgable about this, I'm looking at what I believe to be a Super M-TA LP. I been told that IH never produced any LP versions of the SMTA, but instead shipped a hundred or so to a factory in Texas and had them switched over to LP, and these were IH approved. So these few were the only true SMTA-LP ever produced. Is any of this actually true? How many were actually produced? But, most importantly how can one tell a "factory SMTA-LP" from the rest? I've seen what I've been told to be 3 different factory SMTA-LP's, and 2 are different. One of them was at Bill White's Farmall Collection Auction. This was supposed to be original, but it's different than the one I'm looking at, how can I tell the difference? Any help would be apprectiated, and if there are any questions I can describe the differences if need be. Thanks.

Not wanting to confuse things more, but I have a gas JD420 my Daddy bought new that was converted to LP by the dealer shortly after purchase using factory parts. Just something else to consider on the one you are looking at.

Brian,

The Super MTA was available from IH on factory LPG. Quite a few of them were sold in the Mississippi Delta which was a large user of LP tractors at the time. I have never heard of IH farming this conversion out although a lot of non LPG tractors were converted locally.

I would venture to say that IH did make some LP's in the SMTA series. They may have been outsourced to be final built. To id an IH SMTA LPG, I would look for an Ensign LP carb and gas regulator. Also a LP fuel tank which is perpendicular to the tractors frame(exactly like the Super M LPG has). The LP tank should have a metal ID tag on it with an IH stamp and UL labs approval decal on it too.

As for using a tractor that you see at an auction for a comparison benchmark, I do not like this. Too many tractors have been "customized" by thier owners and many people believe the tractors to be original, "because thats the ONLY WAY they remember them".

The books show IH never made the SMTA LP. A original LP tractor SM etc.. will have the LP tank sitting crossways on the tractor with the steering rod going thru the middle of the tank. The serial no. tag will have a C code after the serial no. and the motor will have a C code after the motor serial no. stamped on the right side of the engine.
