I'm tearing down my 1940 H for some major engine work and general R&R all over the tractor. I took the front bolster off and found it had a huge crack in it starting where the left frame rail bolts on to right under the center of where the radiator sits. Someone did a botch job of welding it in the past, chucks of weld material fall out of the crack (cold weld?). I'm thinking of having my brother in law weld it, he has an arc welder and cast iron experience. I have a MIG welder and no cast iron experience. Any thoughts, or should I start looking for a replacement?

Have someone with experience welding cast steel weld it. One thing that seems to help is to pre-heat (with an acetylene torch) the weld area to a cherry red and post-heat (control cooling) the weld area to prevent further cracking as the weld cools. FWIW!

Where are you? I've got one of these things sittin' on a pallet where it is likely to stay forever.

I'm in West Michigan. I have two extra bolsters already, each with a good thick coating of rust and the parts all froze. Got them at an auction this past summer. Paid $50 for two H bolsters, four H frame rails, two engines, two tranny coverplates, an M rearend, and a bunch of other little parts. All I need is two H rearends and I can make two tractors with the parts I got! A load of PB blaster might get the stuff free in one of the bolsters, I'd just rather weld the bolster with all the stuff in it already if possible and save the rusty two for future projects. I have plenty to do already with the engine and transmission. Right now I'm trying to get the clutch out, it doesn't want to go.

I'll have an H transmission/rear end assembly later this year when I finish tearing Old Rusty H down. As far as I know, it is usable. Old Rusty is now in East Central Indiana snoozing in my barn.

Now Red, that is tempting. Building an H, hmm. Thing is I get guilty feelings looking at my old Allis in the snow, she's stuck. Oh the choices we have to make....
