Super A quits after a few minutes. HELP.

Could use some advise. Been working on a '48 Super A. Have put on new front seal, gaskets, wiring harness, belts, changed all fluids and thought I was done. Had been working fine before except for bad leak around main front seal. Now, after either idling or running under a load for a few minutes, it dies. Seems like it is starving for fuel. Could be the opposite - flooding. Getting some light smoke from the exhaust. Don't remember this before. Cleaned sediment bowl and fuel line screen and found a lot of rust in both. Seemed to help but then it stopped again.

Pulled the carb expecting bad float... no problems seen. Adjusted the carb before this but didn't seem to help.

Wasn't having this problem before I worked on it. Typical! What am I missing? Any other suggestions? Haven't reinstalled the carb yet. It is a Zenith and the dealer doesn't have a rebuild kit in stock.

Help is appreciated.

Had this same problem on a 300. Found it was rust flakes in the main fuel tank. It would allow gas to drip into the carb, but not enough to keep it running. It would start and run at idle but once you moved the rust flakes would cover the fuel outlet and the engine would die.

I agree with Skip. I had the exact same problem and my screen was plugged. Too bad that I didn't know about this screen until I had the carb completely torn down for a rebuild.

I'm having the very same problem. Had the tractor for two days, used it, then it started stalling whenever I let the clutch out too fast. A few minutes later it died. Now it will start, but runs only a few minutes and dies. I have not checked the screen in the carb yet, but all other fuel line parts I have cleaned out. Have also drained the bowl. The points look new. It runs fine for the first few minutes after starting, then starts to miss, then dies. The previous owner converted it to 12 volt, using an old Delco-Remy alt and a resistor between coil and distributor. Although it started right up when I went to look at it, it has not been charging, and the battery is dead. I have to jump it. I will follow up on the suggestions thus far posted, and would like to hear if anyone can think what else is going on. Just started my tillage today here in Blue Hill ME. Planting peas right away.

Boy! - where to start? could be anything under the sun, including everything mentioned in posts until now. For me, I'd start looking in the ignition line. Is it a mag or distributor? Mag - I'm lost, but if it is a distributor, try these:
1, look at every plug, closely - look for oil, but this is unlikely to cause a shutdown, just skipping, but look anyway. 2, look at the points, look closely, not just a glance. Points need to be shiny and good remaining contact material on both the fixed and cam arms. Your tractor will run with the cam arm contact completely burned off. Mine did, just not good. 3, If you know how, put a timing light on #1 and with the engine at about 450 rpm, see that the distributor "retard" is on the mark, which means "Top Dead Center" for the number 1 cylinder. The mark should be a notch on the flywheel. When the engine shuts down like you say, at that time, with the timing light still attached, crank the engine. If it won't start and the strobe light fires, (that is at each plug wire) then the ignition is probably o.k., and you can go on to gas and compression. If you can't, get a friend who can with the equipment. 4, If in 3 above, it won't start and there is "no strobe," then suspect the coil or distributor. When they get warm, the gremlins can come out in supply. Substitute a replacement coil, from another farmall, or just about any Delco Remy will work, I've seen grown men cry before finding out it was the coil all along. 5, If no change with replacement coil, look hard at the distributor cap for cracks and the rotor for contact at each end. 6, Track every wire, and every connection all the way from the battery through the ignition switch, through the coil, distributor, and to the plugs. I think somewhere in here you'll find the problem. Good luck.

Had exactly the same symtoms and tried the same things on my 48 SA (#250556) I'd try something else, get on, mow about 5 min or a lap or two around the house, it would start crapping out. loosing power & wouldn't hardly run. I finally took the head off & found several valves so tight they wouldn't work when it warmed up. I freed them up, started using lead substitute, and haven't had any problens for two years now...DDG

Sounds like fuel problem to me, check fuel out of tank take off sediment bowl, get a can under and turn shutoff valve on, if thats OK, you have ascreen in the carb.. Tafuel line off, remove fitting that the line hooks to you will find a screen on the end of it.
Good Luck, Skip

With the fuel left on, remove the drain plug from the carb. That's a verticle plug that takes a 7/16 wrench, not to be confused with the plug over the main jet. You'll get an initial burst of fuel as the float bowl empties, then you should get a small stream. If you get drips instead you have an obstruction of fuel. This is a quick test of the fuel supply. Also, have you or anybody else recently replaced the gasket between the two halves of the carb. If so, you could have a different problem.
