Farmall H wide front vs. narrow---swap?

I am thinking I want to trade my H factory wide front for a narrow or single wheel front and some cash. I need more manueverability, period. It's a nice solid front.

What kind of value does the narrow front or single front hold as compared to the wide front?
Is it realistic to expect some cash on top of a good narrow front in a swap?
The rims from the wide front should fit the narrow front, correct?

How difficult is it to remove the wide front and replace it with a narrow?

Thanks for the advice!

Have you priced tires and rims lately? They don't give those away, just the narrow front pedestal.

JED: I think he allready has tires, rims and hubs, no point in shopping for another set.

Brian: I'm not going to address any thing other than value, as the rest has been quite well covered by the others.

Over the years I've had several narrow fronts given to me. That was before scrap became as valuable as it is today. Narrow fronts are so plentiful, scrap price is all they are worth. $25.00 is top value for one. Don't bother looking for a trade, you'll just get hosed. If your wide front is in good shape, it's worth $500.+. Buy your narrow, make your switch, then sell.

I once thought I wanted a wide front for my 300, this was 1966. A dealer, two brothers, had a Super H with factory wide front, tyrods behind axle. I offered the one brother $100. plus I do all the labor for a trade, he took me up on it. Well, the other brother growled all the time we were there changing the front ends. He also growled about the deal, everytime I went in their shop for the next 5 years. "$100. cash in hand and destroyed a good saleable tractor", he always said.

Don't let anyone do that to you. It's also interesting 2 years later I took that wide front off my 300 and reinstalled another narrow front I had in shop. Damn wide front just destroyed a nice manuverable tractor.

Well put it this way. Every wide front I have looked to buy they wanted $400-750 for. Every trike front I have seen will bring on a very good day $50. So if I where you I would keep the wide front and buy a trike front and hold on to the wide front end you never know what may happen down the road and you might just want it again

A good condition original IH wide front with tie rods in the front is worth anywhere from $400 to $600 (have to be in the right place at the right time) I have sold two of them in the last four years for $450 each.

Narrow front shouldn't cost more than $50 with the wheels and tires on it. It's an easy swap to go from wide to narrow.

Brian - If your existing WF is in good shape you'll be able to swap it for an NF and at least a couple hundred $$$, probably more.

Providing the WF and NF have the same type cast hubs (there's both adjustable and fixed tread cast hubs) the wheels will interchange. However if the front ends have different style hubs, it's a simple matter to swap the hubs between the WF and NF spindles if necessary.

The single wheel front end however is a completely different animal - no tire/wheel/hub swaps are possible with a WF.

Aside from having to handle some heavy parts, swapping front ends is relatively straightforward. It's best however to have a suitable O/H hoist and an assistant before starting in.

----

Keep in mind an WF is considerably less manueverable than is the NF. With the WF your H won't turn much sharper than you car!

would love to work out a trade! To bad you were not closer we could take a day at my dads barn with all the tools and do the swap right there with a spare H to look at if we didn't remember how to hook them back up.
We have 2 h's and have also wanted to make one of them wide front!

Brian the answer is yes the wide front is worth more than the tricycle in dollars only. The wide front is not as maneuverable. It is not real hard to change but will require a little time. Yes the rims should interchange if both have the same type center hubs. Some folks have put on different hubs to use implement type wheels.
