I have a 46 model A. Starts great, idles great. When I put load to it, the governor rod moves, but there is no power. Just sitting full throttle, I can move the governor rod and it will surge. Nearly stalls out under load.

I spent some time on this yesterday and found that the mixture screw on the carb has no effect on the performance of the tractor. Good fuel flow and great spark. Plan to rebuild carb. I opened the carb a few weeks ago and cleaned it real good but still something plugged. No chance starting off in anything but 1st.

Did watch the governor rod on start up. It works fine. Full on at start and then fades off. When I am pulling, the rod is full on.

As to the post regarding the air filter, how do you clean that can?

Than ks for all your help so far.

check air cleaner. remove cap and oil cup, place flashlight below center tube of air cleaner look down from top, should be full diameter of tube, recently found one plugged bad enough 1/2 inch bar would not go through yet carb could be adjusted to run good just not full power under load. leroy

Get the I&T manual then you will know how to set the linkage and service the gov.

You should be able to start from a dead stop on level ground in 4th gear. This is my simple test for how my tractors are running. You will have to slip the clutch a little, but at full or nearly full throttle you should take right off. If not you have a problem. Does the linkage to the carburetor move as load increases? If so the govenor is probably OK. Maybe you need a tune up or the timing is off. Yes, check fuel flow as stated below also. Let us know. Dave.

Just thinking-- Is the carb getting enough gas? Is there a restriction in the fuel line somewhere? Crack the line at the carb & check for a good fuel flow.

Have you checked the lever which is attached to the throttle shaft & is operated by the governor rod? We had to braze ours when it got too much slop in it. Also, look at or check that the throttle plate is not loose on the throttle shaft[held on with 2 screws]. Is your governor working & set properly? If the spring is broken or has come off, you will have no governor/ throttle action.
