I recently bought a Super M and it seems to have a couple of things that don't show up in the manuals. 1. It has power steering which looks like it came from the factory but maybe it's an aftermarket package. 2. It has a high and low range. There's a knob on a cable linkage - at the right side base of the steering post - which goes into the transmission housing. When the knob is pushed in, the tractor is in a lower range. I don't believe it's what's referred to as a torque amplifier but I don't see any reference to a dual range gear set. Any ideas?

This is all great information. I am currently restoring an MD with the dual range transmission. It has a lever on the left side of the transmission. I am having to measure bearings and try to find since Case IH doesn't have any parts. Installing this aftermarket option wasn't an easy task as both shafts in the transmission had to be modified or replaced in addition to cutting the hole in the side of the transmission housing. That was a good point about the PTO speed as I never thought of that.

My '44 M has the cable controlled 9-speed like you describe. Mine at least is an M & W. I remember that our local IH dealer did sell M&W stuff also. My uncle had them put a hand clutch kit on his new M before they brought it out.
Be careful with the 9-speed, it also speeds up the pto.

Do some checking but it is not factory.

Neither was a factory option. The power steering is likely a Behlen unit. Char-Lyn made them too, but the Behlens were especially popular. Another possibility is that someone has installed a unit off an IH 400 or 450 model, which were essentially the same tractor with a few improvements.

The transmission gizmo is likely an M&W unit, though I believe Heisler may have made them also. The ones I've seen were referred to as a "9-Speed" unit, because they doubled the speed of gears 1-4 but not 5. The factory gears were therefore the low range, the add-on unit provided the high range. No, this is NOT a "Torque Amplifier" unit. Those involved a separate lever on the left side of the tractor to move the transmission into and out of a lower range without stopping. Torque Amplifier WAS available on some of the late model Super M tractors, which were labeled SMTA.

Don't be surprised if you find some other things on the old beast that aren't "factory" stuff. From the 40's through the early 60's there was a tremendous amount of aftermarket stuff that was put on the H and M lines of Farmall tractors to improve power, versatility, and convenience.

I am almost sure the 2 speed is by M&W. We have a 43 M with a Heisler, and it is a lever on the left side of the steering post. Don't think IH ever had anything like that factory. If they did, why would M&W and Heisler get in it?

I can still remember the day the IH dealer delivered two new M's to Dad. One had the over drive and one did not. In 59 dad traded the one with out the overdrive for a 560. We still had the other M into the late 80's. I wish we still had it.

Could it be that your dealer was selling them as a dealer installed item before the sale, even when new? I'm sure that your memory is correect that the tractor was delivered new with it, but I also belive that IH never had anything like that from the factory. As I said, perhaps your dealer was selling them new with the tractor. Does anyone know if dealers did that? Seems like a good way to sell the tractor. If the farmer is going to do it, the dealer might as well set several up like that before selling. Just my thoughts.

Dad had a good day in the hospital and I talked to him about the M. He said it was m&w and he had the dealer install before the M was delivered as I said I was very young at the time.

Our local IH dealer would put anything you wanted on a Farmall before or after delivery. Our little town had a sales rep for M&W in it, and IH installed sleeve/piston sets, transmission upgrades, and other stuff on a regular basis. They even stocked replacement parts for M&W stuff back in the 50's and 60's.

According to "Guy Fay's" book Power steering was not a factory opt. There some companies that built aftermarket steering units. The dual range is most likely by M&W Gear Co.
