Hello, I have a 1943 "H". I need to know whether or not this tractor needs hydraulic oil or motor oil in the reservoir (it's dry right now). Also, do I need to use any teflon tape when putting on hydraulic hose or is wrench threaded tight good enough? I'm a rookie at this and don't want to damage anything. I have use of a PTO driven mower that I want to use and when I bought the H it didn't have any hoses and the reservoir is empty.

How is the rear PTO shaft lubricated? I know it spins as I have tried it once. ( I really need to get a manual for the H).

6-quarts of hydrualic fluid will work just fine. I use Hy-Tran in mine so it matches what we use with our other IH tractors on the farm. Never had a lifting problem with it yet.

If your resevoir is empty hopefully your pump is still good as the pump turns when ever the clutch is let out. IH recommended non detergent 30 wt oil which is what I use in mine. You can put hydraulic oil in it but if you use it a lot it will get warm enough after a while it won't lift very well. I guess it depends on what you plan to do with it.

I have had hydraulic fluid in mine for years and never had a weak lift problem yet.

Seems like 30wt non-detergent motor oil is the lubricant of choice in these old tractors. My tractor has approx 24 hrs run time on the rebuild. Its pretty, (painted up and clean) but it needs to earn its keep, so hopefully the pump still works. All I need to do with the tractor is whack down some tall grasses and scrub brush. What about the hose fitting? Do I need to put any kind of tape around it or just wrench tighten?

Things have changed in the past 60 years. Non detergent oil is for lubrication systems that do not have oil filters. Use straight 30 if that is what you like, but consider detergent oil. Modern 15w40 works just great in the motor. Oil for diesel engines still has zinc in it for the cam and lifters.

ND 30 it the hydraulic system is okay as long as you never rent or borrow a piece of equipment from the nieghbor. Hydraulic fluid universal.

Pipe dope is a better choice than teflon tape for a thread sealant. It works, does not shred, and does not plug up little places in your hydraulic system. If your fittings aren't any good, nothing will help.

If the fittings are in good condition you will not need the teflon tape, BUT teflon tape is relatively cheap and will give that extra degree of security. Just be sure you are neat with it so none of it gets into the system.

The specs call for non detergent motor oil 10W in cold conditions 20 or 30 in warmer. Many use heavier wt hydraulic oil successfully. hytran, or modern light wt. hydraulic oil is a bit too thin.

Please use a overrunning clutch on the mower drive to prevent accidental forward motion with a bushhog type mower. Tractor stores have them. JimN
