I have a 1950 Super A that was supposed to have been a white demonstrator, Is there a way to be sure by the serial #? It does have white beneath the red, and also was made to start with gas and switch to fuel oil. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Provinance, or known info on that particular # is the only real way to know. Just because the serial number fits isn't quite enough. Not all 4000 in the range were white. Is the red an over coat??? Are there places where the red missed some of the white?? Is the white the first paint on the castings etc??? Why would someone paint red over a white demonstrator in the first place??? Some folks painted red tractors white to up the presumed value but not the other way around--unless they did'nt know or care. Hope it turns out to be real.

There is plenty of white under the red, My understanding was the dealer was required to paint the white demonstrator red before the customer took possession. I believe this was one. I have no intentions of selling this tractor since it was purchased new by my Uncle who is now deceased.

Why would someone paint red over a white demonstrator in the first place???

I have an originally white C. Painted red when I bought it. I completely stripped it to bare metal, and painted it red, again. Why?? Because the white tractors simply do not look good to me, and I have to look at it every day. I have no interest at all in selling it, so the added value, if any, is meaningless to me. It's only paint. All it was, was advertising. It's still a C. Yes, Guy Fay says there may have been some red ones in that 3 month period. But, unless someone painstakeingly creates a fake white one, the real ones are easy to spot.

Be careful. About 90% of the guys with 1950 Super A's think they possobly have a 1950 demonstrator. I'm not saying you don't, but be careful just the same..... .

The data below is courtesy of Richard Lantis, a former IH dealer, who, when his dad was an IH dealer, has seen those tractors when new.

The "accepted" serial range is 281269-285298. Casting codes may range from Oct 1949 (S) to March 1950 (T). Tractors were assembled in the first quarter of 1950.

Once he gets all that red paint of and restores this tractor, he'll sell it on e-bay.

It will fetch five figures, and all those John Deere types will come over here teasing us about the prices our Raymond Lowey tractors bring...
