You guys only make comments like these because you know nothing about them. The heads cracked because the owners didn't shut them down properly. These are some of the coolest engines.

With that long stroke, 1480 high idle, you can lug that engine down and almost count the RPM's.
The one I had I could pull a 7ft roam offset all day on 2 gals of fuel an hr. On a 9 ft haybine I could mow 80 acres on a tank.

Gee nc, I was only joking. I know what makes them crack, and the fact remains that a lot of them are cracked. I have run them for thirty years now, and I have been using one daily this spring, so I think "know nothing about them" is a bit rash.

You let it idle for a minute or so to cool a little if you have been pulling it, then switch back to gasoline and run for a couple minutes to cool more, then shut it off and throw the compression release back to the diesel position to allow the starting valves to cool on their seats. I would bet that a lot of the second owners, if not the original owners, just shut them off on Diesel and walked away, and never knew they had a problem until they pulled the head. I did until I actually read an owner's manual, never had any trouble until I gave the TD-6 to my sister, she wanted to freshen the engine up, and guess what, the head was cracked!

I see, I have been going about it all wrong. Good thing I have not been working it yet. I have only had it running in the barnyard a little. I am still working out some bugs on it. I just bought it about 3 months ago, I hope it has a good head. It does run good. I am going to have to pull the head the gasket is bad and leaking oil from the front right corner of the head. I hope this is all that is wrong. It hadn't run in over 14 years when I got it. The guys I bought it from didn't know how to start it. It was their grandpa's. They tried to start it for three days. It took me and a buddy 20 minutes to get it running after we cleaned the tanks and filters. That is how long it took to bleed the system. It started right up. Thanks for the heads up.

I'll bet they're ringing the phone off the wall to find out if the head is good...
