Would like some details on how to convert a farmall c to a 12v ignition system, what is needed and does the wiring have to be upgraded?

This another of those magneto vs battery ignition Ford vs Chevrolet things everone has an opinion and they are not going to change. I personaly prefer 12 volt system and back when we were farming with Hs and Ms we converted them all to 12 volt one reason was that lights were better with 12 volt (as least that was our opinion). There are some things that 6 volt systems will do just as well as 12 volt but I have yet to hear of anyhing that 6 volt will do better.

Bill, Its your tractor and your choice n Old has told ya how to convert buttttt tt if it were a big honkin M is one thing but I see no reason why a lil C shouldt start fine at 6 volts provided you do some maintenance or repair which is likely far cheaper then a 12 volt conversion!!!!! !!!

If she dont charge well and it were equipped with a 3 brush adjustable brush/charge genny, Id set the charge rate up by movign the 3rd adjustable brush closer to the fixed one. Also perhaps the light switch controller is bad or isnt well grounded. If it has a full fledged 3 or 4 terminal Voltage Regulator, a good genny shop could check out thE genny n VR and adjust or repair or tweak if necesary.

A good heavy duty battery and 00 Gauge cables,,,,, ,a good tight belt,,,,, ,clean battery and genny and VR and ground and cable connections OUGHT TO START A LIL C NO PROBLEM

best Wishes

John T

i concur with john t. my H has the original wiring on it from 1945, which is complete garbage, but it still spins over nice on 6v even in a MN winter. the light switch controlled charging system still works fine on it. i"d recommend cleaning all wiring connections. the biggest non-human killer of batteries is sitting unused for long periods of time.

Can be done easy but the cost would be around $150 give or take a little. You need a 12 volt battery of course, an alternator Delco 10SI works well, a new coil thats 12 volts or a ballast resister. Then you need to wire it all up correctly. But as Randy say why they start well on 6 volts but those battery aslo don't seem to last as long as a 12 volt one does. Its sort of a catch 22 either way you go

Hay guys, maybe he has other reasons to convert to 12v.....like me left leg gone.....I need 12v every thing, so I can use 12v winch to lift me to the seat..... no 6v wienches....

Sometimes you dont know the rest of the story and we would rather not have to tell.....

NOW TELL HIM HOW OR WHERE TO FIND OUT...Don

Well I pretty much covered the cost of doing it which is what he asked. As to the how to put in on I'd be happy to explain that if he asks for that also

I just changed over my 340 to 12 volt this spring with the 10SI as old suggested. I went the path of the resistor and kept the 6-volt ignition. Tractor starts and runs good and now I can plug in 12-volt accesories.

I did a 340 last fall, it sat all winter and wasn't started once all winter. I put a battery in it the other dqay poured in a little gas and hit the key and it fired right up. Now if we could only find a good 36 inch rear tire we would put it to work but since new ones cost $400 or so the guy who owns its doesn't want to spend that much money so its till just sitting here

that's a shame. I'd find $400 somewhere to keep my 340 working. It's just a handy tractor. If it's still just sitting there this fall, find out if he wants to sell it ;)

Not likely that it will be. Its one of the next projects I think. We figure on putting a set of 38s on it which are easier to find. We have an H that is a parts tractor so we figure on pulling the whole wheel assembly from the H and putting it on the 340.

My first question is: Why? As Mr. Hugh MacKay says, these tractors were designed to start to 6 volts. If you have a good battery, 0 or 1 gauge battery cables, and good connections, then the C will start just fine. I have two C's that have been converted to 12 volts (prior to my owning them) and one C that is still 6 volts. The 6 volt will spin it over like a top. The only thing it cost me was the price of the two 1 gauge battery cables. If you are set on converting to 12 volts then Bob M has some good diagrams to the left of this page. Not exactly sure where they are located.

One reason is that original 6 volt generators do do put out enough amps to keep battery up with ocassional use. When we used to try to plow all night with H or M lights would be so dim around 2 or 3 AM you had to guit if moon was noy shining.

I have 2 super c's, and yes they started fine on 6v. One has a dead battery after this winter, and the other a dead generator. Should i replace batt and gen with 6v, or should i do the upgrade to 12v. If so what do i need, and where does it go. Thanks, David.
