read hot coil posted by RED Blooded -- I too am having the same problem but I do have a resistor in line and it is working OK
Last year had the entire motor rebuilt aand change to 12 volt system and replaced most of the wires- new amp guage (14 amp output)/ had alt. checked OK- one wire type +coil wire is located on pull switch with resistor / other side(switch) to starter wire --tractor runs great for about 1/2hr then starts to run rough and very little power can't hardly touch coil any ideas --- or anyone with a schematic for wiring 12 volt system so that I can check my wires

Had the same problem with my H. Problem was the coil itself. The first half hour of good operation means the internal dielectric in the coil hasn't "melted" yet. Afterwards, the coil heats up, melting the dielectric and the coils shorts itself out which creates the heat and lower spark voltage. Do you ever see any "black" grease/oil coming out from it?? If so this is what I'm referring to. Best thing would be to get a new coil from IH or NAPA (the NAPA coil will require a new bracket). If you're already up to 12V conversion you can get a 12V coil with internal resistor built in. The need for the external one goes away. Good luck!

if you have this: dist wire to (-)coil(+) to resistor - to dead side of switch, and the alt "BAT" terminal to the dead side of switch, then you seem to have it connected correctly. Are you positive the alt is "internally regulated?" Does it have anything more than just the "BAT" post, because if so, (Delco-Remy?) it may resemble a "one wire" but still have a useable "field" clip and require a voltage regulator. You say it was checked out. How? Spin test? If so, did it produce way over 12-13V, cause if it is a one wire, it should have limited to not much more than 13V. That coil is cheap, so try another one if you suspect the coil, and I would be suspicious of your ignition timing, points, condenser, etc. Good luck, RKS

also, not sure from your post where the resistor is. It should be between the coil and the dead side of the switch. If you have it on the "hot side" between the starter/battery post, and also have the "BAT" post connected to the dead side of the switch, then you don't have the resistor between the alt and the coil and you may be putting too much voltage through the coil. Dead side is the side that is "dead" when the switch is off, and hot when it is on. RKS
