What oil to use in my transmission and independent power take off unit?

1954 Farmall 300 Utility with T/A

The manual called for SAE 80 in trans/ rear end and 10w for independent power take off

Agreed

The manuals came out saying 80W 90 (or so) but it was later learned that the TAs didn't operate very well with the thicker oil. Later tractors with similar transmissions specify hytran instead of the heavier gear lube.

You can use the cheaper Hytran equivelents in those earlier tractors, its only when you get into the newer tractors or hydrostats that I would worry about using Case-IH Hytran.
