Without having a cylinder connected, how can I check if hydraulics are working on my H? How to determine proper fluid level? Is there a specific weight/type of fluid which should be used?
Thanks in advance for help!

Use Hy-Tran in the hydraulics. Fill to mark on the dipstick, if there is one. If no dipstick, check the level with a wire of some kind
and add Hy-tran until it seems to be full. This may take some trial and error to figure out, or if you can find another tractor to compare
with that might help.
Whatever you do, do NOT use detergent type motor oil in the hydraulics, it'll foam and screw everything up.

The engine should definitely bog down on a pull of the lever. My rebuilt 51 H really bogs down. I must have one of the 800 plus psi liftalls.

I agree with Norm on the hydraulic oil. You can, however, use SAE 30. That was the recommendation way back when the H came out.

With engine idling pull hyd. lever back and listen for change. I would use hy tran in it.
