H won"t turnover, crank nothing. I don"t know if it"s the battery or what. 6 volt Battery, can it be chargerd on a regular battery charger, and if so, at what ampage? If its not the battery then what should be the next steps taken? Tractor was running fine yesterday, I did wash it yesterday but ran it afterwards. Thanks and a special thank you to all Vets on this Memerial Day!

Had the starter rebuilt at an implement dealer. Just put it back in and she popped right off. I don't think the generator is working, how can I test it? The mechanic at the shop said that the Farmall starters are known for sticking and sometimes the rocking does free them up but sometimes you just have to take them out.

Thanks!

Well, got a new battery tonight, the old one was dead which tells me the generator isn't working. Anyway, hooked up the new battery and got a slight "crank" out of the starter, but not enough to turn it over. Tried to tighten the nut on the cable that attatches to the starter and it won't tighten anymore and it won't come out. Is it stripped in the starter? Now I have the starter hanging off the tractor by the cable because that nut won't come off. Also the starter push button was very hot when I was trying the new battery. Do I need to find a new starter? What does that mean when that switch was so hot? Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Bomber, About any auto parts house even Auto Zone or Advance Auto or NAPA or Pep Boys etc etc can LOAD TEST your battery and give it a charge for not too much time or expense. Does it have any lights and do any work at all??? Hook it up the same polarity after its charged n tested!!!

Its NOT best to charge with a 12 volt charger (depends on how many amps and what kind n quality of charger) BUT Ive done it with the amps set at the lowest charge rate and didnt leave it on too long. DONT FORGET + TO + AND - TO - FROM CHARGER TO BATTERY so dont get cornfused n hook er up wrong just cuz the battery happens to be Positive grounded.

I agreeeee with the other gents good advice, FIRST thing I would try (even before battery charge and load test) is remove, clean n wire brush, n reatatch each n every battery n ground n starter n starter switch connection.

If a good battery and good connections dont make her crank n the starters not mechanically stuck/jammed into the flywheel, post back for starter n starter switch n more troubleshooting tips.

Check everything that John d said plus check every wire connection. 6 volt systems must have all connections clean including all battery, wires to and from switch, wire to starter. Since you washed it, I would suspect it is one of the connections, but definately look at the battery posts first, if there is black crud on them or terminals it won't do anything. I sometimes take a cruddy old screw driver and make sure the connection between post and terminal is good. scrape a clean place on the terminal and post and with the screw driver on both parts try to crank it, if it does you have found the dirty post.

1) Make sure the starter isn't stuck. Put tractor in 5th gear, ignition switch OFF, and rock tractor backwards until you see the fan blade turn a little. Then try to start it.

2) Battery or battery connections may be the problem. Clean all corrosion off terminals, and make sure they are tight.

3) The 6 volt battery may explode if you hook it to a 12 volt charger or if you "jump" it from a 12 volt battery. Since it's still a 6 volt system, it's almost certainly a positive-ground system. Pay attention to that. I you decide to use jumper cables, put the - clamp on the STARTER TERMINAL and the + clamp on the frame for a ground. *DO NOT JUMP-START THE TRACTOR WHEN IT IS IN GEAR!*

4) There is always a chance that the starter switch is bad.
