When I was eight, Dad started showing me how to shut the gas on and off and had me memorize the gear pattern to our old John Deere MT (still remember it, even though next year it will be thirty years since I've seen that tractor).

On MT the Power Lift controls live between the operator's legs. Dad had me push the clutch in every now and then while the tractor was off and securely parked. When I could fully depress the pedal all the way without hitting the control levers, the lessons began in earnest.

I soloed the next year at age eleven.

My daughter, who is seven and a half, can almost get the clutch all the way down on my Ford 2600...

I can vividly remember my first tractor "driving" experience. Dad had an H with a semi mounted mower all ready to go. He parked on a slope near the house and set the brakes. At age 5 I got on it to play, got the brake off and rolled the tractor backwards into the corner of the barn.

I don't remember learning how drive. Must have started real young.
