Actually the question is not as risque as the title. I have bought a it from this site for my 49 C Farmall. The rod bearings were pretty shot and it had some small groves in the crankshaft under the rod bearings. I ordered the .002 bearing to put back in the motor. The question concerns my innate desire to get my emory cloth and carefully remove some of the groves before I put in the new bearings. They aren't bad enough to have the crank ground. One mechanic told me to not touch them and just put the new bearing in as it is. What do you think?

Thanks for the thoughts. If I were to have the motor off the tractor, I would definitely do the machine shop route. As this is an in-frame job I just have to do or not do as able as it is in the tractor. Thanks for the tips. I will consider all.

Go ahead and try and dress up the crankshaft it it will make you feel better, but in the name of humanity man, wear something or at least have the decency to lock the door.

Take the crankshaft to a reputable auto machine shop and have them to measure and examine the shaft. They will be able to determine what should be done. It may only need to be polished,
but with grooves they may need to grind it. Hal

If you want the crank rite remove and get it ground then you will have something. You can sand all you want but it wont be round therefore an eggshaped crank wont hold any bearings whether or not you have it smooth.

Probably should have waited to clean up the crank before ordering bearings, just incase the cleanup takes them down a notch to .003 or further. I would not use emerycloth, but use Crocus cloth and a very fine grade of it for sure. You can get it from some good auto parts stores or a machine shop. The best way to make sure the crank will last is to take it out and have it cleaned up, but if that is not in the plan then here is one thing that will work. It takes two people to do. with the pan off one person gets under and puts the crocus cloth over the journal and holds it in the center of the strip (use two fingers only to pinch both ends and gently pull straight down) and directly under the journal while the other person turns the engine hand crank slowly. Spark plugs out of course if that applys. check progress with a micrometer. Be careful as it is easy to get things uneven and that is BAD! This won't work if the groves are really deep say any more than a fingernail can catch, that is time for the machine shop. The straighter, truer, and polished the journals are the longer it will last.
