I need some good advice on the Bull pinion gears. Are they supposed to be kind of pointy on the ends of the teeth? Both gears have a flat place on top of the teeth but it is thin say 1/32". If some one has good pics of a known good gear please send it to me or post it. I don't want to put this back together with bad gears. The bull gears look like new. The second gear back from the front in the tranny is also like this. All these gears don't seem to have exessive backlash. I just want to be sure.

Small diameter gears with large teeth have pointy ends. That is reality. Three things to measure/look at.
Is there excessive backlash. (use a dial indicator on the gears when installed to see how much one moves before the other stops it. Measured tangent to the gear's outer circumference.
Is there evidence of heating Blue teeth from no lube. (some gears were case hardened and appear bluish)
Are there brinelled (dented) spots on the teeth, or spalled (fractured out chunks of metal) on the flanks of the teeth.

Backlash should be available in the service manual. All other dents or chips should be considered evidence leaning toward replacement if the tractor is to be put in service. JimN

Thank you JimN! That is what I needed to know as far as the small gears go. All upper gears had some very small dark spots, here and there, where rust had tried to start, but for the most part all the gears look great. the tooth faces are nice and smooth with no brinnelling or spalling. I will check backlash when I put in the new bearings as they are sloppy and no way to get a good reading like that, but just turning them back and forth by hand they seem fairly close. Been working on cars and trucks since I was about 10 yrs old (46 now), but this is my first transmission overhaul. Thanks again, Bob

here is a pc of the trans gears, the one I am questioning is the second gear from the left. I am not sure if the tops of the teeth are thin or if they were cut like this.

When I rebuilt the transmission in my H last summer, I swapped sides withthe bullgears & pinions. That way the gear tooth faces that only saw wear in reverse now carry the load in the forward gears. Maybe a crazy idea, but seems good to my feble mind. ken

Thats not such a crazy idea. Up at school last year there were at least two tractors that people did the same thing to. One was a 1086, and another was an oliver 1950. Man you wouldnt believe how much those bull gears were worn.
