These pages are from a 100 balanced head trailer mower manual, but I think the guards are similar...

Put the guard in a good vice and strike the plate sideways shearing the rivet. then just punch out the rivet piece from the guard. Fast easy and no grinding. Sickle sections are done the same way, set the vice so the support bar just slides through it. (we have a small block of steel with special cuts made in it to replace sections and ledgers. JimN

I usually grind the bottom end of the rivit to remove the part that is smashed over. then beat the rivit out from the bottom. Works better if you can fix some kind of jig to hold it. Putting the rivit back in and setting it is another challenge. I have used a bolt, head up in a vise with a nut on it so it pushes against the vise. It needs to be long enough to be against the rivit head without letting the tongue of the guard hit the vise. Put the rivit head on the bold head and set the rivit. Sometimes you have to turn the guard over and push the rivit head into the ledger plate as it will tend to push out. Needs to be flat in the ledger plate or you will have problems. There may be better wasy to support the guard but this has worked for me.
