If the seals are bad, you will likely dribble out the oil in a few days or even hours.

So, you can try adding oil. But if it all leaks out in 48 hours or so, consider using grease like Georgky says.

By the way, you do NOT fill through vent plug! Simply remove the vent plug and make sure it is clean and not clogged and replace it. In all probability it IS clogged; radical temperature change in combination with a plugged vent causes most seal failure.

On the left side of the steering gear housing (left as you look at the FRONT of the housing) is a second, somewhat larger plug. This is the fill AND level plug. In other words, fill to the top of THIS plug hole, not the vent plug hole.

There is a third, smaller plug, horizontally as opposed to vertically oriented, beneath the filler plug. This, as you can no doubt surmize, is the drain plug.

Thanks to all of you for your quick replies. Much appreciated. I did buy a Case/IH TC=44B 231 page parts catalog when I got the tractor. Great manual with exploded parts lists of everything. Reason I asked is it did not show any fill or drain plug on the gearbox. This post told me where it was. Perfect. I took the radiator metal grill off to get to it and found the fill plug, drain, and the vent plug. Problem was, so much junk, paint, etc. on these plugs (probably never been used). I can't tell if they're square, hex, whatever. Can anyone tell me what they are supposed to be? I think I am in trouble and will probably have to drill them all out. I am better off getting someone with the right equip to drill & tap some new holes & plugs or is there a better solution. A machinist I am not. Thanks in advance for the help!

Troy you don't need a machinest. The plug is a square headed plug. A long handled adjustable wrench should screw it right out. If the head is messed up a pipe wrench will work and new plugs are available at any good hardware or plumbing supply house.

If you are a real newbie, by manuals NOW! Get the IH owners manual and read it, cover to cover, before doing anything else with your tractor.

Many newbies make at least one expensive mistake before they break down and buy manuals; don't be one of them!

Eventually, you will need at least the IT IH-8 shop manual. There are better manuals out there, but they are harder to come by.
