Super C starter

The 53 Super C is having some starter issues. It'll spin just great 1 out of 10 attempts. The other times it just humms. The tractor has a 12v battery in it. It also has a generator on it. When its running the gauge shows no charge. I'm sure it was a 6v system originally. I'm thinking someone just put a 12v battery in it without changing to a complete 12v system. The generator wouldn't hurt the battery but it also wouldn't charge it, right? However, putting 12v to starter may have fried it if it is a 6v starter. Or doesn't it make a difference? I'd like to have it all back to 6v if that was factory. I don't mind 6v systems. What could someone have "screwed up" by just throwing in a 12v battery? I bought this tractor 2 years ago on auction. It probably hasn't been started 5 times since. Thanks for the help in advance

Bob, a 12 volt battery will NOT hurt that starter at all. Is it humming or grinding. If grinding your ring gear is likely bad. Pull the starter and have a look at it. The fly wheel starts and stops about in the same place all the time, so if that is the problem the teeth are worn off it right where the starter engages it at. If you have a hand crank turn it over just a little and then try the starter.

Hey George, definately a humm and not a grind. I took the switch apart, I can't find anything wrong with it.

Bob, if that is the case and the battery is charged, I suspect that Brownie450 is on the right path. There is nothing wrong with the original 6 volt systems. I do have both my C and Super C on 12 volt, but that was due to it being cheaper to install old Chevy altenators on them than buying new generators. I started them both for years on 6 volt summer and winter with no problems at all. My old C has been 12 volt for 23 years now and still has the starter that was on it when I bought it in 1975. Good Luck with it.

I'd remove the syarter & disassemble it to see what it needs. Possibly brushes & bushings---Maybe the starter drive. Ours never caused any trouble & is still on 6 volts. Could be the switch. Easier to check than pulling the starter.
