Super A Transmission Noise

Thanks for the replies. The noise I refer to in my transmission is not a whine, which is present in all straight cut transmissions, but a distinct hammering noise that sounds like someone is hitting the transmission with a hammer every time a particular gear tooth comes in contact with another gear tooth. The noise in only in reverse and first gear. The local dealer said sometimes the oiler gear, which rides on the 1st reverse gear, causes noise so I removed it with no change. The common gear is the 1st-reverse speed gear, but I can't see any obvious problems with it. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Might be a bad bearing on the 1st-reverse gear shaft. Also check shift fork for that gear for a bent finger. Try jacking up one rear wheel of the tractor and having someone turn this wheel while you watch what happens inside the trans. That might give you some better idea of what's going on in there.

One time my great uncle turned the H too tight while mowing with a 6ft rotary mower, and it would make a hammering noise if you towed it in gear. The difference is that our H would no longer shift while the engine was running or move itself in any gear.
My other great uncle died and his wife sold the H before I was old enough to really take an interest in finding the problem.
