I have a 1950 Farmall A. I am looking for a starter for. Could anyone tell me where to look and if that is all I need? Thanks.

Bob,
If you are keeping the 6V system there are a few things you'll need to check. First, clean all the mating surfaces where the starter mounts to the engine and the mounting face of the starter (for good ground). Check all the heavy battery cables to be sure they are in good condition, not corroded, frayed, etc. Also check to be sure these cables are at least 2AWG (that's 2 gague wire) so they can handle the current load of the system. The starter switch is another source of starting woes so be sure it gets redone if/when the starter is redone. Clean the surface where the ground cable bolts to the tractor frame. This should keep you in good shape and get rid of starting problems before they raise their ugly heads.

Phil

I just went through the exact same thing on my 1940 A. The local auto parts store was able to send it out and have it rebuilt for $90. Make sure your old core is a good one (no broken mounting ears or cracked castings)

CT Farm & Country carries rebuilt ones. Do you have the old one. If you do, it can probably be rebuilt cheaper than you can buy one already rebuilt?
