I purchased a after market new {red & white}seat and a pair of new after market springs and tried to install them, well low and behold they wouldn't latch. By that I mean with the seat in the down position the catch on the seat won't drop into the spring's latch, they just don't match up by 1/2 inch. I was wondering if anyone else has encountered this problem and if so, how did you work it out ????

Frustrating isn't it! I recently purchased a set of springs (aftermarket) for my 39 A. I kept the original seat. I have the exact same problem you describe. What to do? I have had several friends look at it and the only fix we can see is to heat and bend (slightly)the seats rod that should drop
into the latch. I thought this would be an easy start to restoration! Not only were the springs slightly off... they were also painted a color (off-red/orange) that I'm sure doesn't match any tractor ever made!

We must have bought the springs at the same place, mine were the same orangish color made in China I think! When I called the seat Co., they said they would try one seat and set of springs to see if they had the same difficulty. They did and had no remedy!

The remedy would be to redo their tooling so that they match the originals in length.

I had the same problem on my BN. I only wanted to replace 1 spring, but had to replace both because
the length was different. I wish that these outfits that go to the trouble of making aftermarket parts would make them fit. It would not have been any harder or cost more money to make them fit. These have made me really scared of mail-ordering reproduction parts without being able to see them first.

Yes. I had to bend the latch rod handle slightly
so that the hooks lined up with the slots in the spring bracket.

On mine the spring handle hit first before they came far enough to enter the latch, so I had to bend it a little to make the latch work. And I had to grind part of the ends off too, cause they were to long for the width of the springs.

Do you know who mfg. the springs? I'd like to write them a letter and explain the problem to them > I think they were made in China? It's a shame that you have to grind something bought new !
