My question is in regards to the 966/1066/1466/1566 tractors. Was the primary difference between them just horsepower other that the 966 which didn't have a turbo?

Are the 966 and 1066 identical other than the turbo?

Someone tried telling me that a 966 and 1466 use the same larger engine than the 1066. This doesn't make sense to me.

Hopefully someone can clear this up for me.

thanks in advance

Thanks guys. Exactly what I was looking for!

I'll assume that SDman and Wayne are correct in that the 966 used the 414 and the 986 had the 436.

Thanks again.

On the 1586 it is a major job to fix brakes, the on we had was "fixed" every 18 months, not a good record. I do not know if this was common or just our normal luck. It also had brearings go out in the trans and one set of main crank bearings changed on oil test results... The good part is the 86 type cab is far better than the 66, and the seat finally moved forward for a better ride and easer to get in & out. the 66 was just some better than aftermarket cabs. When we traded up from a 1466 to the 1586 I didn't miss the 1466 very long!!!!! !!!!!

.Ben, I'll try to answer your questions. As far as engines go; the 966 used a 414 with no turbo(986s used a 436, not the 414), 1066s used a DT-414, 14 & 1566s used DT-436s. 966s had a smaller diameter clutch than the turboed models. The axles, axle bearings, & bull gears were smaller on the 966. 966 also had just a Cat. II 3pt hitch, 1066 had a Cat. III hitch. As far as differences in rear ends from a 10 & 1466, the brakes were bigger on 14s, I think there were other small differences that I can't recall now. As far as the 1566,that rear end was quite a bit different, only 12 forward gears, different TA, & planetary final drives with larger axles instead of the bull gear final drives.

The 966 used a 436 engine with no turbo. The 1066 used a 414 with a turbo and the 1466 used a 436 with a turbo.
