Hello,

An old farmer has an M-diesel. He wants 1500 more or less for it. It runs ok, it needs tires, tin is fine, needs paint. Everything seems to be there.

as the owner of 2 MD's you know what my answer will be. If the tractor starts and switches over to diesel the motor is most likely in good shape. I would check the antifreeze, oil, etc. These tractors have been know to crack heads but that was usually related to the fact that they were not properly cooled down after being worked. These 2 tractors I have were used and were pulled but they were taken care of. My vote would be to try to buy it.

There is a lot of things that can affect the cost of a tractor. One of the big ones is the tires. For a decent running M as you described I would expect to pay between 750 to 1200 depending on a lot of little things and location (I'm in SE Ohio). Diesel would add or subtract from that. A poor running diesel will cost more to repair. A good running diesel is a little more desirable tractor than the gas to some people (me included). But the real factor, and the end to this long winded reply, is the dollar to grin factor. If the grin you get from the tractor is worth more than the $1,500 in your pocket it's a good deal.

sounds like a good deal. a M diesel is kinda cool compared to gas one. I would try to get it down to about $1000, but then you might get him mad and he woul;d call off the deal.Rear tires are about $400 a piece installed. About the only thing is the old diesels had this head cracking problem? Is it ok?

Do you have any experience with IH diesels? Have you cracked the head on any. I have three of the IH diesels and probably have 30 thousand hours combined on them and have never had any head problems. I think most of this head cracking problem is gossip

The three MD are now an average 50 years old, that is 10,000 hours per tractor. My old math only comes up with 200 hours per year per tractor. My guess is Red also has the hours in the tractor seat to prove it. I am sixty years old I know I am well over the 30,000 mark operating tractors. He didn't afterall say he personally put the 30,000 hours on the three tractors. Well Red, more snipers without a handle or a name.

I got stuck with one with a cracked head, a 350. Guy said it was a blown head gasket. So YES I do have experience with an IH diesel. A buddie of mine had problems with his too, even when he cooled it down. So don't go attacking someone as not having knowledge. There are different experiences that are had on all things mechanical. Maybe if you listen to others you can learn more. Thats why I used that as my sign in name, because all you self proclamed experts rip on every one. I just wanted to let him know what I experienced. I quess I will just not answer any more and let you "experts" handle it

I personally think its a very reasonable price. If the tractor does'nt smoke, starts on gas and switches to diesel, and trans works correctly I would buy it.
