Should a person change head bolts, if you do a valve job, on a 560 Dsl. they are probably original, I know they have head gasket problems, when you pull them hard, and I hope I can Thanks

I would like to add a few things about the head bolts on a D-282. When retorquing head bolts, back off one bolt at a time about a 1/4 turn and then retorque following the pattern given in the service manual. I have taught this to Ag Mechanic students for many years and we have proven it many times that by first backing off the bolt a 1/4 turn, you will turn the bolt farther when retorquing, giving more clamping force against the head gasket.

One thing that should also be checked is that all the water passages are open in the head, block, and head gasket. There was a service bulletin from IH years ago that two water passages needed to be drilled out to allow more water to flow in cylinder 4-5 area. As I remember you were to use the head gasket as a template and I think you were to drill the holes to 5/16.

I have also heard about people that would really pull the D-282 hard. They would install a couple head bolts from a Farmall "M" gas engine in that right rear corner of the cylinder head. That seems to be the bolt that is often broken. If you would like I could look for that old service bulletin. Good luck

Yes, I would replace them, stretching is a problem anyway, also look at threads in block and see if about 2 threads have been removed at top of block deck, this was recommended by IH and done on later D236-282-301 diesel, under high torgue the block would distort up around these holes, this fixs that somewhat.

Andy,
If you plan on working the tractor hard, it would be cheap insurance. Also, be sure to chase the threads in the block with a tap before starting to reassemble and after the engine has been run up to temp and cooled back down to retorque. Repeat this after a couple of hours of operation. If the bolts have held torque at the second retorque you should be ok. If not, keep rechecking them every few hours until they do hold torque.

Phil
