Trying to cut corners...

1940 Farmall H, Block was rusted solid, inside and out, found a motor in my uncle's garage that was overhauled completely 25 years ago by my late Grandpa, it's never been run but it turns free. (he cranks it over once a year when he walks by it) My uncle isn't sure if the motor came out of an "H" or a combine. The motor looks real similar to my other H's. I do have the serial numbers off the head and block, are there cross reference books to see if it will fit? or what's the next move?

Check the casting numbers on both blocks and see if they are the same. Or if they are at least close. Also, you could measure the bolt holes on the rear of the block and the sides to see if they are the same on both engines.

A word of caution: after 25 years without being more than just turned over that engines rings will probably be stuck. Expect oil consumption for a while until the rings unstick.

Thanks for the tips, I have the block and head numbers listed below. The H is about 2 hours away at my hobby farm and I've got spring fever, plus some other projects, so I'll measure things up in next time I get there, unless I can do it the easy way by posting the numbers. I do have a couple of other questions for whoever's checking this out.

The same H had Baaaaa ad Gas...in the tank, smells like turpentine, plus there was an inch of grey clay in the bottom of the tank, after rinsing with some acid, round rocks and assorted other methods it's not bad, but is there something to make it sparkle?

Just picked up an f-20...it's stuck, a guy wants to give me a working condition/been stored 1969 IH503 combine...need to move it 300 miles, plus I'm still working on an f-12...piston won't come out without the sleeve, but I'll ask those questions later.

Thanks,

-Block #s:
Flat smooth spot on mag side, top "middle" of motor = 34693ht.

Numbers are also stamped on the block, mag side, top left too, they are 358261r1.
and,
the Head is 362533r1.

If it looks the same, check serial # above the dist. on the upper right hand corner of block, should be on a small flat surface, on both engines. Post those #'s for more help.
