Hydro means hydrostatic transmission. The speeds are infinitly varible within two ranges. They were good for light work like loaders and pto work. Not so good for plowing and heavy tillage.

Bill depending on what you want to use the tractor for a hydro may be just the ticket. For heavy tillage it may not be so desirable but for loader and hay work it would be ideal. The hydros do have a hydro decal on the hood, another way to tell is there will be a speed selector lever on the left side of the hood, the travel of the lever is guided by a "Z" snaped channel. On the right side is a range selector lever, has 2 positions. The gear driven tractors have 2 gear shift levers side by side on the right side and possibly a "TA" lever on the left, but the TA is optional and may not have a lever there.
