My "new" IH 300U needs a tune-up. In ordering parts, I am asked whether it has an IH or Prestolite distributor. I haven't a clue.

I have checked for a tag or other identifier, but find none. Can anyone tell which it is from the following clues???:

1. Cap is held on by spring clips;

2. There's a sort of "cover plate" under the rotor that hides the points;

3. The condenser is clipped to the outside of the distributor (condenser end says "972002 DR");

4. Inside cap says "Made in USA";

5. Coil & condenser wires attach to a plastic "cube" with screw stud on outside of distributor;

6. Tractor serial number is "19359 SJ".

Are any of these things identifiers? Is there any other earmark that would identify which I have?

Thanks very much for your help.

Thanks gentlemen. Mine has a stud bolt for the coil wire, rounded bottom and made of cast iron. So it looks like IH is the answer!

Again, thanks very much for your replies.

Easy way is IH was cast iron housing, Prestolite are parts replacement and housing is cast aluminum (pot metal).

Bob, If your distributor has a stud bolt with a nut on it sticking out of the side of the unit where the one coil wire is attached it most likely is a IH distributor. ON the other hand if the thing has a wire coming out of a rubber grommet style connection (No bolt or nut) on the side of the distributor that leads up to the coil, it is likely a Prestolite. Another way to identify is the housing (end towards the radiator) has almost a sharp corner its a Prestolite where if the corner is more rounded then its an IH distributor.//FB
