I've replaced everything in the steering department on the '52 H except the gears which are too expensive. The thing still wobbles quite a bit in road gear. I hear that IH made a wedge type thing that fit right above the lower bolster that helped this? If someone could explain to me how it bolts on and where I could maybe get one at I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks!

RC

I took the bolster shaft to my machinist and had him turn down both wear ends and weld new original spec bushings in. Then he touched them up in the lathe and she fit like new. Cost me $90 and will last my lifetime. Do you have visible wear on the gears?

Don't know if you can get one at dealer but you just drop lower bolster place shimmy plate with thick part to rear of bolster to move wheels forward and bolt back on top. If you have a full gear on top maybe you can turn to get better teeth
for straight forward.

I have the wedges on my H's and M's put the wedge in so the boltster slants back to give more caster. if it is forward it will be much harder to steer

When I had it apart I was hoping to have a full gear but its only the half gear style. Sounds easy enough to put that wedge on. If only I could find one....

RC - I ran into a similar situation when I rebuilt the steering on my SH last spring. I found there was wear on the upper end of the pivot shaft so there was some "east-west" play at the upper end of the pivot shaft after the new bushing was installed. That translated into slop between the worm and the (slightly worn) sector gear and thus play in the steering mechanism.

The solution: When I installed the new upper bushing, I shimmed between the LEFT side of the bushing bore and the bearing shell. This removes the slop and also moves the sector gear CLOSER to the worm - taking all the play our of the gear set. Figuring out what size shim to use was a trial and error exercise. Seems to me it was 0.010" x 1/2" wide and bent in a radius to match the bushing OD.

The Super H now steers like new. Incidentally it also had an OEM wedge shim in place when I took it apart.

Does anyone know if the wedge mentioned by Bob M is avail fron OEM and part number. Ive heard from a number of people that this mod alone can sometimes fix the problem. Ive got a 400 with this problem and Im ready to get into it as soon as the weather warms up.

If not avail, what is the taper? Thanks for any info

The bolster flage wedge shim does not show in the SH parts catalog. Note however the casting marks look to me like it's an IHC part (photo).

Curiously the word "FRONT" is cast into the THIN edge of the shim. Doesn't make sense to me, but that's how mine is installed - and the tractor steers fine. The shim tapers from about 5/8" on the thick edge down to about 3/4" on the opposite edge.

Thanks again Bob M, unfortunantly the photo comes up with the message unavailable, now that I know the taper Ill be able to figure it out once I lower the front end.
