Haven't had to work on one of these lately. Whats the opinion about using JB Weld and how well does it really work over the long haul. Also does anyone have a method to clean up the pipe threads inside the manafold?

28 years of welding has taught me that there is NO substiute for a WELD. I've done many manifolds from various equipment. I prefer to use an acetylene cast rod with a can of flux and torch weld it. If it's on the "rotten" side of old age it'll burn up with an arc welder. Alot of manifolds are ate up on the inside from moisture. I've repaired alot that have been paper thin around the break. Good luck on whatever method you go at.

I have successfully welded a couple of exhaust manifolds with cast rod (sticks) by heating the area to almost red hot with the torch then hitting it with pretty good amperage. Good luck

I waited until Harbor Frieght tools had a sale on large pipe threading taps and bought a set of three 1-1/2", 2", & 2-1/4" for $11 awhile back. Thought I'd get that much use out of them with just one "chase"...they are still going strong and look like brand new. All of them have a 3/4" square shank on them for a wrench to turn them.//FB

big john,
if that crack isnt to bad, i mean where it will fall apart, try using "hot weld" its made for exhaust manifolds and this stuff works great. i patched a couple holes on my h with it last year. and its holding real well. this hot weld you can buy at a NAPA store. just be sure to clean the manifold real good before you apply it and follow the directions. works great. but if you think its to bad to repair like that, then a welding job should fix it up. good luck.

I used JBweld on the manifold of my F-14 and had to redo it in about a week. JB weld does not stand up to the heat cool cycle. I then brazed it with the torch and it has held ever since. As for the threads, I just weld a pipe in if they are gone. I suppose a machine shop could cut it out and put a sleeve in and rethread it.

Braze it or use nickel rods and a stick welder. At least that is what has worked for me.

We generally replace the cracked ones. To clean the threads, take an old pipe, cut off the bottom threads that are usually shot, the grind 3 or 4 grooves at about a 45 degree angle accross the threads, use lotsa PB blaster, and a pipe wrench...this works well as a poor mans pipe thread. Pete

The JB weld is a waste of time on exhaust manifolds- far too much heat. I have seen gasoline powered tractors get the manifold hot enough to melt brazing. Diesel exhaust is cooler than gasoline. The torch welding or arc welding is the better method.
