SMTA hydraulic pump problems

I bought a SMTA this summer and at the time hydraulic pump appeared to work. At least when I pulled back on flow control lever the motor would pull down and the remote hoses would jump as if under pressure.

Recently I bought a Behlen p.s. unit for this tractor. When I installed it I could not get it to work. Checked the flow control valve and it was froze up. Got that cleaned up but it appears pump is not putting out pressure. Engine no longer pulls down when activating flow control. Inserted preesure gauge into the remotes but could not get a reading.

I am not sure if pump is getting hyd fluid and am worried that pump maybe burned up. We used this tractor last fall to auger 50-60,000 bu of grain, but never used the hyd. When I checked with CIH dealer the parts man said there was no repair kit avaiable nor pump. Hoping someone could help me with this problem.

Boog,
If you did not install a priority valve with your power steering unit, neither it or your hydraulic system will function. Each system returns fluid to the reservoir at very low pressure loss when in neutral. If you pull back on your Lift-All rod and simultaneously turn the steering wheel, you should once again hear the engine pull down slightly. If both are not done simultaneously, the other allows the fluid to return to reservoir at the low pressure. The priority valve splits off a predetermined flow for the power steering. In the case of a power steering priority valve, this will be 4-4.5 gpm at 900-1000 psi. All excess fluid will be diverted to the secondary circuit, which will be your power lift. If you have a priority valve, then something has malfunctioned or is connected incorrectly.

Boog, I am not an authority on the SMTA hydraulic system. I do know that the lift-all control rod has to be engaged (pulled back) and latched for the remote hydraulics to function. If it is not pulled back, oil is by-passed and does not flow through the remote valve. Consequently, there will be no pressure reading at the remote connections. The pump may be starving because of low fluid level in the system and reservoir. Our SMTA has a separate pump for the power steering and is independent of the tractor hydraulic system. Not being familiar with the Behlen P.S., I am unable to comment as how to correctly connect your power steering to the tractor system. Best wishes and keep us posted. Tom

The SMTA does NOT have a belly pump, SMTA's came with the live pump mounted in front of the distributor.

I'm not an authority on the SMTA pump either, but if the pump is starved of oil it will burn up. I always make sure to fill our reservoir often as we have a couple of leaks. What kind of oil are you using? I use HyTran in ours since it is used on the same implements as our other tractors with HyTran.

We may be on to something. After reading the different posts I went back out to the shed tonight and did a little tinkering.

I tried working the different hyd control levers (Lift-all & flow control 2way) while turning the wheel. Here's what I found

1. Pull back Lift-all control - no power steering 2. Pull back flow control - no p.s. 3. Pull back both levers - got p.s.

Farmalldan, appears you are correct about the priority vale. I know Force America offers one made by Greshen, approx. $165.00. Befor adding the p.s unit I had discussed this with CIH service manager and a tractor restorer. Both had said that as long as I wasn't using both at same time that I wouldn't need it. Obviously they were wrong. Growing up we had a '54 SM with live hyd. Having seen tractors with the priority valve installed, I do not remenber the ole Super having one. Would there be a differience between it and the SMTA as far as hydraulics are concerned?

Tom, you stated your SMTA has a seperate pump for p.s.. Since the SMTA's did not have a belly pump, am I correct in thinking that yours has 2 pumps behind the distributer? If so, are you picking the feed for the p.s. pump from the feed for the live hyd pump?

The guy I bought my p.s. unit from took it off a '39 M that he was restoring to original. He threw in the pump he had and I had considered installing it in that manner but was hesitant. What do you guys think?

Steven, I also use HyTran in everything that I have that uses hydraulic oil, including the wet kit on our semi.

Being the older IH tractors do not have a hyd. filtering system I added an hydaulic filter on the pressure side of the pump.

Thanks for all the help so far. I'll keep you posted as to how things turn out.
