Just a dumb question. Why does everyone think that the only way to cut brush is with a bush hog? I've always used a 7' sickle mower and have no problems. The H, C, or the 300 can easily handle it. Although, the 300 with live pto is much handier as you can ease the bar into a sapling and let the knife work it's way through. I mow 35 acres every summer for a neighbor. I do it once a year and in the good stuff can move along nicely. If I break a knife off, I always carry spare knives with me and wrenches and in a couple of minutes I'm back up and running. I've thought a couple of times myself of buying a hog but then I stop and think that all I have to do is keep the knives sharp and properly lined up on the bar and it'll do whatever I need. These are just my thoughts.

Big Green,
I have an H and know it's limitations fairly well. You said you wanted to plant and cut some brush. as far as planting goes you should be fine. When it comes to cutting brush you might think a bit, the H doesn't have a live pto meaning every time you push in the clutch the bush hog will slow down and eventually stop, it's not impossible to work with but it makes it more difficult. Most H's don't have live Hydraulics unless they've been converted by a previous owner. Also they didn't have a 3 point hitch, unless an aftermarket hitch was installed. Both of these items are make the tractor much more useful, and will work with the more modern implements.
If your set on finding a H look around to see if you can find one with the 3 point already installed and has live hydraulics. If you have plenty of H's around where you live you just might find one. If you find one with a tired engine figure that it will cost around $1000 to rebuild the engine if you do most of the work yourself.
But I love my H and work the heck out of it!

Big Green, I have two H's , an M , a 584 and a Case 300. The H's are good workers and a hobby farm could get along just fine with one. I always start with the tractor running and if it suits me I check the manifold for cracks or damage and the rear rims. There's long lists of what to look for but rear rims and manifolds can be costly H's are fairly easy to work on and there is no problem getting parts, your local Case I-H dealer can get you anything you need..good luck from Mike in Exeter Ontario

IH made over 390K of the H's and it is fun to drive easy to work on. LOTS of Torque, also weighs in at 3200lbs. I have a 44H and its great. It might be a little overkill for what you need, But the power is there when needed. WHat to look for when inspecting, do an engine compression check should get between 85 to 90 psi on all 4 cylinders, look for cracks and or welds in the trans and engine. make sure all 5 gears work good. 5th gear is 15 MPH, a little scary. and make sure it starts good. GOOD LUCK. :)

Look on the farmall-H website and it lists the H at 3175 with no fuel or weights. A super H might weigh in at 4200lbs.
