Steven in looking through past posts I see you were looking for info on 2+2. I would like to add a couple of things. You will need a crow bar to check the pivot bushings, because the wear is vertical on the bottom bushing. The top bushing floats up and down. We just changed the bushings in a 3588 that we just bought. next the drive line from the moter to the trans. bearings and U joints, also the steering cyls. for wear on pins and bushings. For more info email me

I think the bull gears are wider in the 37/6788 so that takes away your 4th speed. We have a 3788 and love it. Bought it at an uncles auction. It had 1500 hours and went for 19000. Just my two cents worth.

Thanks for the additional info! Dad is afraid of the 6788 3 speed tranny - he once had a 1586 with it and went with 1086 because the 3 speed did not have the proper speeds. Any comments on 3 speed tranny in 6788? I think they are at least synchronized.

I doubt there is much wear on the bushings as the 3388 has 2000 hours and the 6788 has 3000 hours. Auctioneer claims the 6788 to have same shifting as a 5488 - perhaps a prototype 7288 with 6788 decals?? Will find out in a couple weeks when I go to the auction!

The 3 speed transimissions are collar shift transmissions so instead of sliding a big heavy gear like a 4 speed you just slide a collar across the shafts so the shift much easier but they still weren't synchronized. I haven't had a problem finding the right speed on our 6788 but it is used mostly for tillage. Since you would be replacing a smaller tractor with it you should be able to shift up and throttle down to get the right speed.

We are replacing a higher horsepower 2 wheel drive tractor with it. Well, not exactly replacing either, just using them for different things. Our 2590 Case puts out 205 horses on the dyno and the 6788 is rated for 171hp. I am thinking that the added traction will help, and of course turning with a heavy load will be a breeze if we get it.

Thanks to everyone for the additional comments!
Steven

Don't know much about 3 speed tranny, drove a couple when we were looking at 2+2, didn't like the speed ranges available. The 6000 series has the electric tork which is a plus, as far as the pivot bushings, it all depends on how much the owner used his grease gun. All the tractors we looked at with original bushings were well worn or shot, regardless of hours.

I bet the thing is 6788 has the shift levers on the RH side of the seat, like the 5488 would. Seems like I remember reading that in Ken Updike's book. However like was mentioned, it is basically the 3788 transmission with an electric TA in there, giving the "appearance" of shifting like a 50 series IH.

I'm envious. I'd love to have a 3388 myself.

Al
