Hello i have just bought an M and i am going to bring it home in a few days. I was able to get it running but when i tried to move it the left wheel brake is stuck. Is there a good way to get the brake free??? I pumped it several times but it will never fully reliese. The pedal is moving but i don't think that the pad is. ANY help would be very helpful.....thanks

AP, I agree with the Red. I had a brake frozen on an H and it was a marathon trying to get it off. We spent most of half a day. We sprayed penetrant onto the brake lever where it goes into the tractor transmission frame. We heated the area with a torch, we tried everything. Finally we had the cover sprung enough to get the lip of a large pinch bar between the flange of the brake lever and the tractor. My friend wiggled on the brake arm with vise grips over the end for extra leverage and my other friend gave the pinch bar a whack with the sledge while I held it in place. It took four good clouts to get it out. It had been rusted solidly into the tractor, there was hardly anything left of the brass bushing. I couldn't believe how tight it was or how hard it was to get out. I reamed the hole out with a wire brush on the end of the drill and bought new brass bushings . Every thing went together well. I did the drum seals while I was at it and cleaned up the original bands and adjusted them. I can slide both rear wheels on the gravel lane. Someone mentioned WD40 and I've never had any luck with it. WD stands for "water displacement". It is good to use to dry up things like a wet distributor..spray on, wipe off and its dry. It has some silicon base but dries up quickly. I used to use it on my car doors but they would be squeaking in a few weeks. Since I started working in an auto shop we use a product called "Move-It" and I'll swear by it..any penetrating oil will work fairly well also.Good luck with the frozen brake, be patient, keep wiggling and tapping...Mike in Exeter Ontario

It is unusual for a brake band to stick or bond to drum, check it out by taking the cover off and see what is problem, I would also suspect a ball bearing or retainer from bearing might be caught in tooth of bull gear at bottom of main case, or lodged in teeth of bull gear & brake shaft, tractors this old need to be completely disassembled in the transmission and rear frame to check for failing bearings, I have worked at IH-CNH dealers since 1960, this is common in high age tractors of this era, if you dont it turns into a big mess, lots of broken gears. It is a job to do it I know but if tractor is used and depended on its worth it. If the brake band is the problem that is easy fix, if its still locked up dont try and force it free by pulling it around the yard, I have seen many broken rear cases from ball busting out the bottom, very close clearance between case and bull gear.

AP,
It sounds like the brake is stuck just as a clutch may stick when it sits for a long time. Be careful at this, but you may be able to free it by starting it up and then putting the tractor in low gear and letting out on the clutch kind of quickly. You could hold the other side brake at the same time to increase the pressure on the stuck one. I wouldn't do it more than 2 or 3 times if it doesn't work, so that you won't break anything. I think this might take care of your problem, though. Good luck and God bless,
Tommy

AP, remove the brake cover and see if the lever is frozen or has alot of gunk on it. you may not be able to get the cover all of the way off depending on the hitch bracket but you should be able to see what the problem is. Get some brake cleaner spray that will help clean it off and you can use some WD40 on the lever. (not too much) It should be fairly easy to understand how the brakes work on an M, they're really basic.

It is a band that wraps around the brake drum. If you cannot get the cover to come off, you will have to remove the band activation arm and use a lot of penetrant to slide the cover off. More than likely the band shaft is rusted tight into the transmission frame.
