12v conversion question

I have a SMTA that I purchased last summer. Someone had put in a 12v battery but left 6v generator and coil.

I printed off your wiring diagram for Farmall H/M. I figured that SMTA would basically be the same. Went to to town today and got an alternator, ballast resistor, and 12v coil.

My question concerns the voltage regulator. Looking at your diagram I do not see one. Is that because the Deco 10-SI alternator has one built in? If not do I need to replace the one already on the tractor and if so, what do I need and how is it wired in?

thanks boog

Hey Boog - You say you purchased both a ballast resistor AND a new 12 volt coil. If you re-use the existing (6 volt) ignition coil, install the ballast resistor per the diagram. But if you elect to install the 12 volt coil leave the ballast resistor out - it's not required. ...Bob M

Bob M.,

Since I have not yet installed the 12v coil would you recomend using it or staying with the 6v? As far as I know there is nothing wrong with the 6v other than age.

Also, thanks for making wiring diagram available. I had been wanting to do this for a while but wasn't sure how to go about it.

Boog - If it were me I'd be inclined to stick with the existing 6 volt coil, simply because a 12 volt (or a modern 6 volt...) coil just doesn't "look" right on a Farmall. On the other hand, if you don't want the trouble of mounting/wiring the ballast resistor the 12 volt coil is the way to go. ...Bob M
