Just bought a 966 - has had the TA gone through. I will be doing some tillage and haying. Was wondering what it is that causes the most wear on a TA. Does shifting the TA under load contribute more to wear? Does it cause shorten TA life to spend time in under vs. direct? Any maintenance that should be done? Thanks for any advice.

To use the T/A on your tractor the rite way , It may be shifted up or down as long as it is pulling , If the tractor pulls down under load and ya need more power just pull it back and when the load is letting up and engine RPM is almost to the top of the predetermand speed set buy the throttel then shift it up the faster the better. Just do not use it as a way of slowing down with or with out a load pushing you . Change the trans / hdy fluid every 250 hours and change the hdy filter around every 50-100 hours. Keep the clutch and dump valve in adjustment along with the trans brake . If you are not a good mechanic then have someone who is do this.

We used a smta and a 656 for about 10000 hours and it is made to be shifted under load. It was primarily used in plowing through tough areas on the go. Just pull smoothly on the lever and keep it properly adjusted by THE BOOK. We never had a problem.

Don't shift it slow it will cause excessive wear. You can shift it under any load other than using it as a brake on the road, real hard on it. Thanks

Don't shift it under load. Always adjust your dump valve after you have adjusted clutch pedal free play. When I shift mine I usually put it in direct or under and just leave it there.

Keep things adjusted and don't abuse it and you will be fine! Some people can go through one a year and some people don't have any trouble. The question is which one do you want to be?

If I understand it correctly, you're not shifting gears, you're changing clutches. You want to move back and forth quickly because when you're in the middle one of the clutches is slipping and wearing rapidly.

everything I have gathered so far on my 560 planetary type.dont shift going down hill and if it takes longer than 1 second to shift you are shifting too slow.dont know if this helps some of the other more experienced folks can help you out.
