F-20 temp. question

After seeing the post below on F-20 shutters and temp. gauge, I have a question. My F-20 has a temp gauge but no shutters. The temp. gauge pickup is in the lower water elbow. On a thermosyphon system without shutters, it never warms up down there, and the gauge is pretty much useless since it never reads above the lower stop. I'm thinking about drilling and tapping a hole in the upper water manifold and relocating the gauge there, where it will give a more accurate picture of the engine temp. If a stoppage or other problem arises in the cooling system, isn't that a better place to have it, since it would give you more warning of excessive temp. before the whole system got hot to the point of making the gauge indicate? I know the purists won't like this, but it sure seems more useful. Any thoughts, opinions, comments etc.??? Anybody else done this?

Have done what you are thinking about (putting the temp gage on the top of a thermosiphon system) and then you get just the opposite. The gage reads over 200 degrees after warmup all the while. This is as it should be. In order to circulate, the coolant must be heated to about boiling, gets lighter as a result, rises, and is displaced by whatever temp coolant is below it. I'm gonna change mine to a lower position someday..... . Rather experiment with variable speed fan than shutters. Oooooo now the purists will shudder!!! (Working Cub)

As far as I know , all f-20s with shutters got gauges. What they used before shutters was a canvas curtain that rolled out from the bottom and hooked into the holes in the cast iron radiator sides. you could check the temp by hand and see if the lower elbow is luke warm. If you put that gauge up higher on the engine you will cook the gauge (spike the needle badly)since it is calibrated for the cooler water down low.
