What is up with this free gas cap offer? Is it legitimate? What are the people who send them out getting in return?

Andy

whenever we get a tractor with one of these caps on it i grind off the extra set of tabs so it isn't such a pain to get it off or to put it on

Did you read post below about law suit. The new caps were designed for safety, not altering. Even the courts can't protect some people.

we have them on a couple of m's. they are really meant for newer tractors that have the gas tank enclosed in sheet metal. a 400 will use 1/2 gallon an hour more than a super m because the gas is so hot in the tank that much goes out the vent on the cap.

400 probably uses more fuel than the Super M as it is putting out more hp. I never had a 400 but did have a Super M. I know 300 burns about a gallon more per hour than Super H, I had both, and I am sure the 300 puts out a lot more hp. I also know the fuel cap in question was a recall way back in early 60s for letter series tractors after a couple of them blew up. It was standard on all number series Can't remember for sure, there were injuries and I think a person was killed. I figure it may take a bit of finess, however safety comes first with me. As for letter series Farmalls being different, in fuel tank neck, I don't believe that. I know the A and C are exactly the same as 100, 130, 200 and 230. I know the fuel tank is different, letter series from number series on larger tractors, however the neck is exactly the same. I had 12 of these tractors probably clocked 60,000 hours on em. In 25 years that I farmed, my employees or I never had a lost time accident.

I have been told that IH settled lawsuit many years ago with man who had been burned when gasoline gushed out of tank because of faulty cap vent. Part of settlement was that IH would supply new double vented caps free for all tractors with old style caps.
