Farmalldan

Spent the afternoon in the shop and plumbed lines in per your instructions in previous post. Power steering now working as it should. I felt so good that I let out a big war hoop. Sid, my dog, got all excited and ran around the shop barking and jumping. Don't know if he realized what was going on or just excited because I was. My wife says he's almost human in the way he is aware of things.

Problem now is that the Flow control does not have pressure unless Lift-all contol rod is in rearward position. Currently the excess flow is feeding both the Flow control and Lift-all.

I tried plugging off the line to the Lift-all and feeding only the Flow control. This gave pressure at the flow control but cause an increase amount of back pressure on the engine. I figured this was due to the pump not being able to bypass enough oil so I shut down immediately.

Hate to keep bothering you but so far you are the only one who seems to have the answers. I'm realy grateful for the help so far. I can live with it as it is but don't think this correct.

thanks boog

Boog,
This is about what I expected. First, let me quote from the owner's manual for the flow control valve: "The Hydraulic Remote Control Attachment is used with the Farmall Lift-All system when operating tractor-trailing implements. Pull the Lift-All control rod all the way back and lock it in place with the control rod latch. Unlatch the remote control valve lever..... ...."
As you can see, your system appears to operate as designed. Now, a question. When you pull the Lift-all rod back, does the engine load up? If so, is the flow control lever in the neutral position (the flow control should have three positions: up, neutral or hold, and down.)? I would not expect a change in engine sound when you pull the Lift-all rod if the flow control is in neutral. However, if the engine loads up when both rods are pulled back, this is normal since I am presuming you have all outlets (Lift-all and flow control) plugged. This causes the pump output to go over the system relief valve at maximum pressure. With a hydraulic cylinder installed, the system will only put up as much pressure as required to operate the cylinder until the end of its stroke is reached. Thus, you won't experience the engine loading to the same extent in normal operation. Let me know what you find out.

Farmalldan,

Tried to post this earlier but kept getting a message about not being able to post.

Everthing is working as you described. Flow control works with Lift-all control rod in rearward position. No back pressure against engine when Lift-all locked back and flow control in neutral. And best of all have power steering all the time.

Sure feels good to get that project done. Still would be scratching my head if it wasn't for your help. I really appreciate all the help.

Also today I replaced one rear axle seal, reworked one brake, and replaced governor spring. Tomorrow I hope to rework other brake, replace other rear axle seal, and install a carb rebuild kit. Previously I had converted it to 12v, and rebuilt the front steering post. Doubt if I get it sanded and painted before planting season but at least it's back up and running again.

Ordered a operator's manual, parts manual, and service manual.Hopefully they will arrive soon.

By the way, are you planning on attending the Red Power Roundup this summer in Penfield, Il.? I live about 25 miles from there and will be attending. Maybe we can meet and I'll buy lunch. The least I could bo for all your help

Again, many thanks
boog

Glad to hear everything is working to your satisfaction. Sounds like you've done a great deal of work on the old girl. Also sounds like you've got a working tractor and not a parade tractor. I always claim my tractors have to work for their keep, but the truth is, I like to hear them under load doing what they were intended. Thanks for the offer of lunch, but it's a bit far for me to make the Roundup. I'm in Oklahoma. I'm glad I was able to help a little with your project. That's almost as good as doing the work myself on one of my tractors. Enjoy your SMTA and good luck.
