I know that disk brakes were put on some of the last M's Farmall produced before going to the Super series. How many of these tractors had disc brakes? Thank you very much.

From the beginning of production, disk brakes were available as an option. The brakes were made by Lambert Company and are similar, but different than the disk brakes on the Super and later series. The Lambert brakes have three bolts holding the housing to the transmission case. I believe the brakes on the Super Series use 6 bolts. I have an MD with the Lambert brakes. I saw an M sell at auction last fall that had them. It sold at a small premium because it had the disk brakes. At least the quy that bought it told me that he would not have paid that for it except it had those brakes. It was rough, and as I recall it brought $1500. I've also seen a few on the internet for sale that have these brakes. I needed a part for one of mine, and finally found it from a salvage yard, but it was not easy to find. You can still buy the disks from IH. The disks on the Super series don't fit, the splines are different. Sorry this got so long, and I have no idea how many H and M tractors had these brakes, just that there are not many. One Salvage dealer near me had not even heard of them.

HAAS - I don't think they were ever an option as in "Factory Installed in lue of band brakes".. I think "IH Approved Dealer Installed attachment" would be a better description... The key would be whether repair/replacemnt/adjustment would be covered in the service manual or owners manual. I know it's not in the Owner's manual Dad got with His '51 M.... and it's almost late enough (built 12-8-51) to have had the Super M disc brakes.

I've been told that Lambert brakes were a factory option, although they could have been dealer installed too. I have owners manual, a service manual and a parts manual for my MD, and the Lambert brakes are not in there either. However, the parts book at my IH dealer shows them, and he could have gotten new disks for me, but I opted to have them relined instead. It's easy to tell the Super disk brakes from the Lambert, because of the three bolt attachement. The pedal linkage is different too. Maybe someone else can enlighten us as to whether the tractors came from the factory with the Lambert brakes.

My parts manual shows Super M type brakes on Ms MVs fron serial no. 294226 up and MDs and MDVs from 285505 up some say last M serial number was 298218 so not many were made. A different tpye of disc brake was available as option from day one supposedly.

Conversion disc brakes from Lambert are in the M parts book, I dont know when they actually first offered them as a parts accessory from IH, I am guessing by the series of part numbers about 1950. They adapted the M band brake to disc brake, the last M had Ausco brakes, spline diameter is smaller, the Lamberts had a large fine spline bore on the discs.
