All of them are right. If the tractor is in good shape and was well cared for there are no cons.In my opinion, for what it's worth, the 56 series was IH's finest hour.

In my opinion the 856 was one of the best tractors ever built by anyone, icluding the almighty Deere and Co. Buy it, you won't regret it if the tractor has been cared for.

I owned a 1968 856 IH for 12 years and couldnt destroy it.That D407 is a great engine. It was turboed and was run in the field at 150 horses. It was pulled as a 12,000 lb SS pulling tractor for 5 years at nearly 400 horses and later on as a field stock at 200 horses. It was about as tough of a tractor as I have ever seen and they are a great old work horse. As far as I knew it had the original TA in it when I sold it in 1986.I sure wish I had it back. Here are some pictures of it.

Red,we all quit plowing around here in the late 70's and by the mid-late 80's the mud was all but gone. You rarely ever see anyone stuck these days no mattter how much it rains.Farmers all over this part of the country were fighting the same mud that I was back in the 70's and early 80's.RWA combines even got stuck alot. The new N-7 Gleaner pictured even got stuck the day I took those pictures. You could drive for 100's of miles and see stuck combines and rutted fields every where. No tiling was ever done in this country.

Hi 1206SWMO,
If I got stuck like that every fall, I think I would find somewhere else to live. That must have been miserable.

I was wondering on how you got 400hp out of that little Roosamaster injection pump?

Thanks,
Matthew in SD

Matthew,We didnt get stuck like that all the time. The worst mud years I can remember were 1962,1967,1974,1977,1979,1981,1983,and 1985.1981 was about the worst ever as we mudded all the wheat out that summer and then mudded out everything that fall.It was just a way of life down here as we had alot of high rainfall years.Deep plowing caused alot of the problems. We quit plowing in the late 70's and by the mid 80's the problems were all gone.

To get 400 horses out of an 856 IH you ran a Roosamaster pump with a 450 pump head,.093 lines,big injectors,and a big turbo,and turned about 3300 rpms.The 856 had a 4100 flywheel and clutch.

Pro: IH
Pro: red
Pro: D407 diesel engine
Pro: POWER
Pro: shifting is better than the 06 series
Con: can't think of any

Does the TA work? If not, can you live without it? They can get expensive to work on. That's the only problem area I know of with IH tractors. We have a 1256 (same engine, turboed) and it is pretty well bullet proof. The shifting will get a little sloppy if you use it for loader work.

All I have to add is, if you are going to use in for loader work you will want to add a hydraulic assist on the clutch. They are kinda stiff without it.

Keep your pto linkage lubed and don't slam it down. If you do it will create a hydraulic lock. If it binds and you jump on it to shut it off, you will shear the small pin in the pto valve. Pretty common problem on them.

Good luck
