After putting possibly one hour on the newly acquired tractor, it just stopped working. We believed at first it was a carburator problem and changed it, but it is still not starting (motor is turning however). There is still an unusually large amount of gas shooting from the carb when we try to start it, and even though the spark plug seem fine, it appears there is not enough spark to start the motor. What should we do next? Could the problem be something else? It seems that there are a bunch of knowledgeable guys out there, we appreciate that you are taking the time to help mystified wanna-be farmers like us. Thanks.

I've got a 300 U and have experienced similar problems. If you have replaced things such as points, etc - what kind of spark plugs are you using. Are they getting fowled after running for awhile. If so put in D21 spark plugs. Mine was doing that and the hotter plugs fixed it. Todays higher octane gas needs a hotter plug. The other problem I had was junk in the gas tank. It would occassionally plug the outlet and starve the tractor for gas. You may also want to make sure there are no leaks in the carb.intake manfold system. Leaks can get works when the tractor warms up. As for gas coming out of the carb, I've found all my tractors will leak gas from the carb if crank too much with out starting.

Things to consider from another amature.
I have a 300 utility which is experiencing a similar issue. When an hour passes it begins to miss and then foul out one of the plugs. With calling some others who know more than I, my next step will be to take my coil in and, if possible, have it tested or if not possible get another.
Bad coils tend to malfunction after they become warm, or so smarter people than I tell me.

Thank you Jerry for your quick reply, but we already installed new coil, cap, rotor, points and condensor but it is still not starting. Must be something else, and we still can't figure it out.

From a guy who always screws up the timing - check that, then start looking for the loose wires or dirty connectors. BE PATIENT. good luck

Could posibly be the timming gears have stripped, I've replaced several over the years. When the tractors running fine and quits for no aparent reson this is a good place to start looking.
