After a long search my son and I found a really nice H. We put money down on it and are in the process of researching the trailering costs. We have tossed around the idea of driving it home. It would be mostly back roads but its 84 miles. I'm sure it could be done, and this tractor sure looks like it could handle the trip with ease. I'm just trying to decide if we are that cheap. It's sounds like a couple hundred dollars to get it trailered. Just wondered what the unoffical record was for cheapskates like me.

This is off subject but I have heard my dad tell this story many times. Back in 1920s he and nieghbers teenage boy went to mule sale in Columbia TN with his uncle. Uncle who was old mule trader bought 12 mules and a shetlen pony. Early next morning dad and other boy left out riding and leading mules and pony. They traveled nonstop to Decatur AL down US 31 about 100 miles. Trip took about 30 hours. HE said they did not see a dozen cars or trucks all night.

For those of you who like tractor rides, the Henderson Saurkraut Days committee is planning a 40 mile tractor ride on Saturday, June 29. We plan to start a 9 am at the LeSueur County Pioneer Power grounds and travel on a 40 mile route, ending in Henderson in the early afternoon. E-mail me for more information. All colors welcome; 10 mph minimum speed.

When I bought my 504 I drove it 25 miles from Kansas City Kansas to my home to the west of KC. It was about 100 in the shade that day, my wife was following me in the airconditioned pickup pulling the trailer load of implements I got with it. We had to stop and tighten the generator belt and get water once after the loose belt made the temp go up. She was sipping on a cool drink in the truck and had to wave it at me once in a while. I enjoyed every miseable minute of that trip, took two hours, counting the trouble stop.

Thanks for the stories and tips. I really enjoyed reading them. I think a backroad tractor run for charity would be alot of fun, if well organized it could probably draw quite a croud and raise a decent amount of money. It would give guys/gals an excuse to get all the fluids in the old girls warmed up and show off a little too. I guess my own trailering issue is settled. We found a guy who will truck it on his tilt-bed for nothing. He owes us a favor, and we just found out he had the truck. I do think it would have been alot of fun to drive it. Like Ralph said it would be something father and son could do together and we would always think back on it fondly. Well, maybe the next one.

Growing up we routinely drove our C and 8N Ford from one farm to the other which was about 10 miles on back roads. Many times round trip transferring equipment from one to the other especially during hay season. Took about an hour each way. We did not have the luxury of trailers then. About a year ago I needed to move some of the old equipment once again as I was going to sell one of the farms and at the time I did not have a trailer. I drove round trips moving everything from sicle mower to baler to plows. Enjoyed the drive especially listening to the whine of the C in road gear. Start early and be careful.

Several years ago I drove my Super C 20-25 miles from one property to the other. Yes 10-12 mph took about 2-2 1/2 hours, but the rest of the family followed in the truck, and picked up aluminum cans the whole way. I recently moved it 90 miles, and the gooseneck trailer came in very handy.

Let us know what kind of gas mileage you get. I took a JD A about 30 miles once seems like it only got 4 or 5 miles per gal.

I used to do a LOT of road work with an H and Super H... They should get better than 7-8 mpg... maybe as high as 10-12... 2 gal. per hour divided by 16 MPH... and that's pulling a pretty good load. We used to pull 6000-10,000# loads of ground feed, shell corn, hay etc. all summer. Neighbor & I drove Our 4010 diesel home from the auction Dad bought it at... Diesel REALLY got good milage... 18 mph and about 1 gal. per hour... seems like it was 30-40 miles home too.

I had a brother home on vacation, volunteered to take 1066 with duals to dealer for me. He had never driven the 1066. We never discussed route, was in winter. He decided to take short cut on gravel road, after 3 miles and last house he discovered road had not been plowed all winter. He put front wheels up on snow, had been a lot of freezing and thawing that winter, curst carried 1066. He put tractor in 2nd high and drove five miles on top of 4 feet of snow. He said front end was his only problem, but found if he kept speed in 2nd high was allright. This area was wooded, not much danger of sun creating soft spots.

Just last week I bought a 300U. It was about 11 miles from my house so I decided to drive it. A girl in the office (real estate place) where I bought the tractor said "That'll take you two days!" Turns out she was right. About half way home it conked out: crud in the fuel line and had a dead battery. Took the battery home and put it on the charger overnight. Came back the next day and finished the trip.

When I bought my H the guy who I bought it from Trailered it about 80 miles or so. I would not even think of Driving it that far. I made a promise to myself after buying it, saying that I would not drive it down a mainroad because drivers have no respect for anybody especially a guy on a farmall H doing 15MPH. TOO DANGEROUS FOR ME. I would pay the $150 or so to have it trailered.

I don't know what you intend to do with this tractor when you get it home, but if you intend to take it anywhere later you're going to need a trailer and truck!
I drive my H to the gas station when it needs gas but that is only about 3 or 4 miles. Heck I take it further than that just giving the grand kids a ride around the "neiborhood" about once a week.
You will be intimately familiar with every bump in the road for those 84 miles. Run your tire pressure down a bit to smooth it out some.

Being a beginning farmer with a great deal of energy I have driven most of my machinery to the farm from a good distance away. Where ever I find a good buy. I drove a Massey 410 combine 100 miles - took 7 1/2 hours. Then I bought a Massey 550 combine 135 miles - took an afternoon and a morning. Bought a Case 2290 tractor - drove it 125 miles - 8 hours. Drove a John Deere 70 gas and a Farmall 706 gas 40 miles. The keys ..... 1) Make sure the machine is sound and can make it .... including brakes, steering and power train. 2) Make sure you are safe ... you do not want to cause an accident. 3) Keep moving .... don't stop too many times. Pack food and drink on the tractor. Stops can really add to your time. 4) Pick the best time of day and day of the week to do your driving. You really get to know your machine by driving it that long. These combines and tractors were heavy with weights and fluid .... no real tire damage. The old H would not be bad on tires. I have drove my JD "B" in the Iowa Tractor Ride twice with no flat bars at all. I must admit that all of my journeys were adventures. Never had mechanical problems although. Also .... what a story to say you drove it 100 miles. Goodluck.

It would be a nice drive.

As far as the engine is concerned, 6 hr at 15 mph is not much different than 6 hr discing at 3.5 mph in a field, except lighter load on the road. If you don't have lots of hills an H in good shape should make it on one tank full.

If you have front end shimmy, let the air down in one tire and the shimmy will ease up.

Have fun and stay safe.

Though he may not drive it all at once their is a guy in area who farms from Joliet, Il to down in Louisiana. Drives all his equipment including combines. Really some sight to see 6 combines and almost as many tractors and grain carts parading down the hwy. When they are harvesting people almost run off road cranning their necks. Sure glad when he leaves area as they tie up the elevator and nobody can get anything dump.

Boondock,

Here's my opinion, if the H is tight, it would be very inexpensive to drive it home...Here's a plan: Remove the 8 bolts that hold the governor cover in place and back the high speed bolt out to let your old H get up to speed. Instead of going 16 mph, turn her up and get her going about 20-22mph. My M will do that no problem and it sounds really good doing it. If the motor is in good shape, it won't hurt it in the least. Once we drove an old JD Combine home.....the Hydrostatic tranny would disengage on the downhills and the combine would have to be stopped for the tranny to start working again. That was a fun day and I think any experience moving a tractor anywhere does a body good. Take you 10 jugs of gas, a picnic lunch... Man I would love to do it. Good luck,

Jared Jeffries

Wasn't me, but a crazy neighbor bought a M in South Dakota. Drove it home to Wisconsin. He said it was something like 450 miles. as for wear on the tires, 84 miles isn't going to take off enough tire for you to even notice. I've driven a 1206 90-95 miles and you couldn't tell it on the tires.

If you can stay off even moderately busy highways, try it. The motoring public, I find don't have a lot of respect for tractors unless its a 100 hp with duals and a loader. If its heavy enough that they will get the worst of it in crash they will show respect. Bolt a couple of 8" H beams on H for bumpers before you leave.

In 1970 we drove our 1966 Oliver 1950 trtactor with 4-53 Detroit 100 miles from Nevada,MO to Springfield,MO.We pulled it in the 15,000 lb class at the 1st ever Ozark Empire Fair tractor pull, won it,and drove it 100 miles back home.It ran 25 mph at 3200 rpms and it was only 4 hours each way with my younger brother driving and me following.

You guys may think I'm crazy but in the next couple of years I hope to buy a 1206 wheatland IH somewhere out in North OK,Southern NE,or in Kansas and for fun will drive it up to 500 miles home.Thats an easy two day trip with no problems.I know all the back roads to Western MO.

Five years ago I bought a 1975 715 IH combine with 15 ft head and drove it 50 miles home on an Easter Sunday afternoon. It took 3 hours with no problems.I also drove another 715 IH combine 40 miles home.

boondocksjones: No one has talked about the REALLY IMPORTANT part. Would you and your son have a great time together doing this????? If so, go for it. Screw the wear on tires which will not be much for just 84 miles. You'll never see that tiny amount of wear if any is gravel roads.

If you and your son have a good several hours together and it's something different to remember.. do it. For peats sake on all those worried about everything EXCEPT having something "different to do together" for a father and son. Take turns driving, with a pickup behind following. ralph

No one has said anything about tire ware. With the price of tires today it might cost you more in the long run than to have it hauled.

Local farm tire dealer once told me that when the farmers all drove there tractors to Washington DC in protest, that they turned the rears around backwards so they wouldn't wear so bad.

Use to see tractors being towed behind pickups using a dolly under the frontend. Very similar to the dollys used behind large motor homes to tow small cars.

GOOD LUCK

Speaking of tow dollies, I was comming out a sideroad one day with Cat 3306 and load of logs. I couldn't believe what I saw wizzing by on main road, a Crysler mini-van, tow dolly and a Massey Harris 44 standard. I turned unto main road and with speed he was going I never expected to see him again. Surprise, after 20 miles I caught up to him. He was making 50 mph and heading for the 4 lane highway. Sure enough on 4 lane he was hitting 70 mph. Found out afterwards he went 40 miles on 4 lane, was a clergyman, I guess he had the lord with him. I expected to see bull gears of that old Massey go into orbit.

A neighbor of mine drove a 9930 cotton picker 120 or so miles to get it home and nearly ruined a good pair of rice & cane tires. Took him 9-1/2 hours. I know an H isn't nearly as heavy as a cotton picker, and wouldn't be as hard on the tires, but it might be something to think about.

There are a couple of bolt holes on the front pedestal that you can bolt a bracket to with a tow bar hitch. Easy to make with a torch/welder. Then it can be pulled easily with a pickup at 20 mph. No need for a man on the tractor. Just put it in neutral and you could tow it all day without damage.(assuming oil levels are correct) With the tow bar you won't get the front end "shimey" and it is much safer than a chain. Just watch the hills etc...

Hey Brian - I found a hitch like that in a scrap pile a few years ago. One end bolts right up to the pivot shaft extension on my SH and the other end pins into the SM drawbar. It's how we ferry the tractors to a couple local shows/pulls we do each summer, like one of my daughters gets ready to do in this photo. The outfit runs smooth and easy at 18+ mph...

most rollback guys around here charge $1 a mile and semis cost around $1.30 so 80 miles i think i would find a good trucker and let them haul it. those tractors aren't fast and steering can get sloppy.

Don't know about cheapskates but how's this for scofflaws: I grew up in Nebraska, nearby a prison farm. And one morning, a trustee/inmate hooked a JD A to a manure spreader, drove away from a dairy barn,... and kept right on driving. 120 miles before anybody thought to ask any questions! RedTed/MO.

I'm glad you asked this.
I bought my Super A in Wyoming. I live in Virginia. After working hard to find a reasonable priced trailer ride, this girl at work and I came up with a plan. She had and old Volvo in Colorado she wanted to bring east. We were in the process of getting laid off as engineers for a big company. We figured if we got laid off we'd have nothing better to do than drive these things east. At any given time one should be running and one could tow the other. We figured about 2500 miles.
Well, we did get laid off, but we not drive 'em back. I found a good ride for my Farmall. Her Volvo is still out there I think.

SOME FARMERS HERE IN EASTERN VIRGINA WOULD PULL OLIVER COMBINES BACKWARDS TO SOUTERN MARYLAND BEHIND PICKUPS. THATS SOMETHING LIKE 100-125 MILES

Nick 15 miles in a little over half an hour! Does your governor go to 3500 RPM or do you have 50" rims?

Just a thought....we used to have an M, and the front wheels would wobble pretty good when running in 5th gear, unless you held it tight to one side. Might want to check on this first. Would be really, really long ride if you had to fight that the whole way.

Hey John,
We had the same problem with our H, turns out if you let air out of one front it will take a lot of the wobble out.

Was just talking about this same subject with the local IH mechanic. He said a farmer he knows bought a 4440 JD last year north of the Twin Cities. After getting a quote, he decided to drive it the 146 miles home! At least he had a good cab. Matt

One of my landlords drove his new IH 10-20 home from the IH plant in Hamilton Ont. (approx.38mi.) with no cleats on the drive wheels. In those days, the tractors were delivered by train to Hamilton where the new owners drove them from there. Many drove much further than my landlord. His was purchased around 1930.

I grew up about 20-25 miles from the FARMALL Plant... Lots of local dealers ran tractors from the plant to the dealership back in the 40's & 50's and even into the 60's. I guess the distance where running or hauling changed over to hauling was about 50 miles from Rock Island.

Well, I heard of a fella that worked for a guy I know years ago. He worked land that was all over the county. He had an older fella who was working for him, and at the time was raking hay with a super C, was all done and was just going to move equipment to the next spot. The boss told him to take it to some field, and gave him a name of the field. The fella asked the boss if he was sure, and he said of course, drive it, don't worry about trailering it. Fella said alright, and from what I understand he drove that tractor 33 miles pulling that hay rake. The boss was thinking of one field a couple miles down the road and accidentally was thinking it was called something else, but the hired hand knew the names of the fields correctly and did exactly as he was told thought he meant the field far away. When I was working for a fella who had a country with the county to mow the sides of the county roads, I drove a 1066 about 20 miles to the otherside of the county where the next area to mow started. There are farmers around me that farm in Maryland and Virginia, and some will drive there tractors over 50 miles, but not generally at one time, just move from field to field, and occasionally drive back the whole way when done.

Several years ago a coworker drove his "new" '39 JD B (no road gear) home from Naples NY to Churchville NY, a distance of 69 miles. What's truly amazing however is he did it in February - temperature was hovering in the teens. He left Naples at first light and arrived home (nearly frozen despite being dressed in a full snowmobile outfit) at dusk 9 hours later .

"Never again" he declared afterward....

The longest distance I've heard of someone driving a tractor home was 40-50 miles.

I've got a Super M I'd like to move 450 miles and I was considering the same thing. At 16 miles an hour it'd sure take some time. I wonder if I could make a big event out of it. Drive 450 miles to wipe out hunger or something. Maybe I could get sponsors to pay for gas and food and do some good in the process...

Or maybe I could just borrow a bigger truck and trailer.

Ludwig, I have had the same thought. I do the MS150 bike ride for MS. Why not a big tractor ride event for some good cause, Like farm aid or make a wish fondation oh heck anything to get to fire up the old iron would be a lot of fun.How bout the sight of a few hundred tractors rolling down the back roads. Sounds great. If anyone can ever get the ball rolling on something like that I'll be there.

Hey, perhaps you could turn down your governor and turn up the intake so you can get the fastest speed out of the least gas. You say 16, which is what my SM should be at, but I'm clocked at 22-23. To tell you the truth, I bet I could set that thing up to touch 27. I really like your idea about the hunger drive or something, and it would be great if you could make signs and stuff and campaign a little bit. Although some will see you as an idiot looking for an excuse to drive his tractor 450 miles, when you turn in lets say 1000 raised dollars to the Salvation Army see what they say. The way to do it would be going door to door or to businesses and asking for a pledge of so much a mile. You could really make this big, have fun, get the tractor home, and do it for a good cause all at the same time. Good luck, and e-mail me when you plan on doing it. I'll pledge.
