More Crank Questions...

I got my crank off today and washed her off in the parts washer....

What I noticed concerns me. First of all, from what I can tell the crank is ground .020" under (I looked at the back of the bearings as suggested). Most importantly though...on the front main bearing, there are "hair like" looking cracks (2 at 180 degrees from each other). I say hair like because their shape reminds me of a hair on a counter or something. I can feel them with my nail.

So what now ? could they be just cracks in the finish ? Like I said in previous postings... the crank had a ton of play in it, I'm fearing that they might be stress cracks. This tractor is only used for mowing the lawn and doesn't see much use. Because it's the front journal or bearing surface, do you guys think I can get away with it ???

Take it to a machine shop and have it magnafluxed. Broken crankshaft in a running engine could ruin every other part of the engine and leave you with big $$$$ to repair it. Post a wanted ad on this site and you will probably find lots of crankshafts. It is a Farmall A, right? Then it is the same crankshaft from A, Super A, B, C, Super C.

Brian: I suggested looking at the backside of the inserts. 20 thousands is quite a bit allready gone. Another bad thing is when it's too sloppy it starts wearing "out of round" The power strokes tend to wear one area more than all the way around the journal. They'll want to grind down to lowest area to make it round again. An out of round surface has the crank beating itself to death vibrating and is bad. Maybe more consern than a crack on the front journal even tho any crack is bad enough. If the good crank is around $100 you said?? Maybe better consider buying it soon. A grinding shop may be the final checkout on this cracked crank. ralph

Well... I've got those Ebay Blues.....

the crank went for $61.00 ( about 150 CDN with exchange and shipping ). I thought this was quite a risk since I don't even know if it was cracked as well.
So. Here I am... woe is me. I guess I'll be taken the crank to good old Joe at the local dealership ( Joe was 5 when his dad bought the dealership back in 54 ). Thanks all for the repsonses, I will keep you all informed on the Crank Status.

Brian: For the work of assembly its not worth it. In a earlier post one of the guys suggested these cranks were readily available at a reasonable cost. Remember if that crank is faulty, it will fly apart much faster after you tighten everything else up. You could find yourself buying a lot more parts if that happens. Take it to a expert for an opinion, its hard to judge without seeing. Hugh
